Mail settings
« on: November 27, 2019, 07:39:47 AM »
There are three things that I would like to change in Mail but cannot find any way to do them:

1. When sending an email, there is a "whoosh" sound. I would like to specify a different sound.

2. When I download emails, there is no sound if there are no emails to receive. I just get a notice that there are no emails. Can I add a sound to signify this?

3. When composing emails, the window has icons but no words to describe them (for example, sending has a paper plane icon but does not say "send"). I have tried using View > Customize Toolbar but there is no option to add words to the icons. Is there any way to do this?

I have looked in Mail Preferences and can find no way to do these things.

  • Mail Prefs->General->New messages sound: pop-up list including none.
  • Create a rule? Might be best to create a rule for specific senders/subjects/domains, otherwise checking your mail could become very noisy! :wallbash: It might slow down the receiving process.
One option for a "Mail Received" sound might be to set up a rule sounding based on Priority.
  • "Customize Toolbar" has a pop-up button labeled "Show" in the lower, left-hand corner. Choices: Text Only, Icon Only,  and your favorite, Icon and Text

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

For #3, the option to show icon, text, or both is not available. It is available only for the main toolbar, not the toolbar in a new message window.

Actually, none of these is a big issue for me. The problem is that my other half is VERY resistant to any change in what she is used to do doing. We had a big to-do about the appearance of fonts in Mail that weren't to her liking. Still, I'm very font of her...   :D

I understand. But, if you can get SWMBO to slow down just a wee bit, for even a few days, she will be able to see a 'tooltip' under each icon displaying some text explaining the purpose of the button. She may be able to simply absorb, unknowingly, what each icon does. That's been a trait of Apple's Human Interface Guidelines since the start of the Mac, even if they seem to have lost track of that book of late... BTW, I try to offer some encouraging words of praise every few days that go by without needing to help my wife use her MBP... :whistling:
