Encryption
« on: February 19, 2020, 04:28:11 PM »
Is there any means of encrypting or password protecting individual files using "Numbers" without having to encrypt the whole HD using filevault?   Heretofore was using an app named "Encrypt this" but after upgrading SWMBO's MBair to Catalina the before stated files no workee no more. 32 bit app. I contacted Nathen the developer of "Encrypt This" who indicated he MAY upgrade the app to 64 bit but the exchange did not leave filled with confidence.

I suppose he did not offer a suggested alternative app?

Does she need to share the encrypted files? If so, do they need to be edited by that person or simply viewed?
If only to be viewed, you can use Preview to create an encrypted .PDF file via the app or simply using the Print to PDF in the Print dialog.

You might try searching with "encrypt a Mac file", also. Also lots of zero to 3 star "encryption" apps at the App Store.  Best bet may be SimpleumSafe, $36, conforms to GDPR standards. :dntknw:

Many seem to simply use the .zip system, but that is known to be a less secure method and only uses 128 bytes. The second largest group use PDF which is already available in Preview. :wallbash:

You can also use built-in commands in Terminal... Definitely non-GUI. :)

I don't think I am interested in any more 3rd party encryption aps for the very reason that support becomes ify over time.

The files are for viewing only, and edited frequently.  I just purchased and downloaded MSoffice 2019 and as I recall Excel has a means to password protect individual files so may head off in that direction. Not a real barn burner problem but something she wants done.

Thanks

Since the Apple iWorks apps have that capability, I'm sure the MS apps would also have it. Of course, if there is no editing needed from the recipient, a simple encrypted PDF would be fine.

Since only the "sent" document would requires encryption, it's the only one that needs that step. One less step in the workflow, assuming her computer already requires a password...
