Tip: deleting spam without reading it
« on: June 10, 2020, 01:24:17 PM »
I sometimes get emails that are obviously spam when I read the subject line. Rather than look at them, I delete them by Control-clicking the email and selecting Delete from the contextual menu. I can then go to my Trash folder in Mail and repeat the process.

Another tip: Beware that some emails can have hidden links. I have accidentally clicked in a blank area of an email and been directed to an unwanted web page.

Look for symbols substituted for letters, obvious misspellings, and spurious email addresses from the sender. I received an email, purportedly from someone I knew, that had wsorchesttra as the return email. Her correct address is wsorchestra (one t). The sender pretended to be this woman, asking me a favor if I could send money to a needy friend of hers. Naturally, I phoned her and she had been on the phone with AOL for two hours trying to resolve the problem (all her contacts had been hacked).

Be vigilant! There are lots of dirt bags out there with no conscience or morality.

I would have sworn there was a Pref for disabling third-party images. Don't see it now. Perhaps the "Load remote content" is now the Mail Default... :dntknw:

It's in the Mail prefs ->Viewing - deselect "Load remote content in messages" - I have always had it deselected, so not sure which is the default.

I'm not sure which is the default either, but I just deselected it.

EDIT: I just re-selected it because I was missing visual content in emails that I wanted to see.

Thanks, KimberlyPaddy  (Patricia?)!
The problem with having it enabled is that invisible/transparent gifs can get loaded in the message. And they can be assigned as a link and positioned just about anywhere. I suppose they can even be huge and cover the entire screen, thus making even the "blank" space a link! It's one reason I don't like viewing email in iOS, AFAIK, there is not similar setting there. :wallbash:
