how to Zoom

I am a complete novice with Zoom, having neither used it myself nor seen it done. In a few weeks, I will be participating in a Zoom meeting with the members of my orchestra and I need to know how to do it. I have set up an account at https://zoom.us and don't have a clue about what to do.

Can someone walk me through the procedure?

I'm sure you have already visited the company's site?

I've seen my wife Zoom™ multiple times, she's even led a session, that included a European attendee. I can ask her to describe how easy it is, but she's on the phone with her Sister and it could be hours ...  :laughhard:

Seriously, I don't think it is that complicated. Many kids in your neighborhood can probably give you detailed instructions! If you are simply an attendee, I think all you need is the special url that the leader will send to you.

One trick we've learned, if you will be using a laptop; stack up some large/wide books or solid boxes to raise the laptop. Try to get the camera as close to eye level as possible. That reduces the distortion caused by having your chin closer to the camera than your forehead. It also makes finding a more clutter-free background. BTW, make sure other household 'animals' (both two and four legged mammals) remain out of the room and fairly quite during the session. :rofl: OTOH, if it is not a business/formal meeting, a more "natural" atmosphere can make the meeting more fun!

Thanks, Jim. It doesn't sound all that complicated. My iMac can only be considered to be a laptop for a user who is 8 feet tall, and I am merely 7' 11".  :toothgrin:

Do you have any old children's high chairs around the house/attic? :Thinking: You may have to remove the arms to sit in it but it should raise your eye level as well as some eyebrows!!! :rofl:

Breaking news!

Zoom Etiquette: If you leave your computer, especially to answer a call to nature, don't forget to Mute your mic!

Be aware that the person who sets up the session can control your audio as well as whether your image is visible. I think that includes having multiple people able to talk at the same time. Single person talking saves bandwidth.

You may have your audio muted at all times, it's up to the person who sets up the meeting. If you want to talk, you can virtually and/or visually "raise your hand". If there is a survey or vote, actually raising you hand is fine. If it's a secret vote, there may even be a Vote button!

The Zoom site has a good demo that will help acquaint you with those buttons and where they may be on your screen.

BTW, you don't even need a 'computer' to Zoom! You can use a smart phone and have only audio! I don't think that would be as entertaining, however. Who knu!

This is good to know for me.  I've barely mastered FaceTime!  I don't think I even know anyone who Zooms.   :eek:

I use Zoom weekly for various business meetings. It's easy to use. Just know it has a 40 minute time limit unless you buy their package. If you do run overtime and the app ends the meeting, everyone can just re-link and start another 40 minutes. BUT... Zoom does get hacked which happened today, and I will post that separately because it was a shocker!  :upset:

Yes, as soon as the use of Zoom increased, it became a large target for hackers. Zoom claims to have greatly improved security protocols back in Mar/Apr. But many first-time registrars are not always very interweb savvy. And hackers are the virtual "Whack-A-Mole" of the interweb. It doesn't help when folks post all kinds of personal information on various sites. The interweb social network is mostly a huge, public neighborhood bulletin board; anything you post on it can be relayed to anywhere in the universe. There are still people who don't know what the BCC field is for in email! :wallbash: OTOH, most newer generations don't know what "carbon paper" is...  :rofl:

I've had one Zoom meeting. Loved it.

I gave myself a background of our cat playing with my partner but after 20 minutes it looked like animal abuse so changed it to the Northern lights a-flickering.

I also loved the button for improving your appearance - I had that on full revs and boost - with a possible Kardashian/Anniston setting!

LOL...good thing I didn't have a cuppa when I was reading that! Keyboard would have been toast.

Monster? I'm surprised it wasn't the other way around! :D

Anyway - Zoom is easy-peasy to use. Whoever sets up the meeting sends out the invites with the link and you click on that and think I had to put the code in (from the email invite) but that was about it. A few months ago I started "meeting" with my old friends from North Andover once a month - it's been great, since a couple of us have moved away and some of us hadn't seen each other in years. We always use about three 40 minute sessions - just re-login and off we go again.

That sounds simple enough. I doubt that I will ever initiate a Zoom meeting, but participating in one that is already set up appears to be easy.
