whitelist a site
« on: November 18, 2020, 10:34:32 AM »
My wife uses Babylon extensively for translation. The newer versions of Safari give a warning about its not being secure and she has to jump through several hoops at that site to get it to load. Is there any way to whitelist the site in Safari so that we don't get that warning and go directly to the site (it used to do that in earlier incarnations of Safari)? I can't seem to find a workaround in Safari Preferences. She has used this site for years and, unless someone knows something, I think that there is probably no security risk.

Looks like the problem is at the site's end, they are using outdated security measures according to Apple and hopefully other up-to-date browsers. Firefox allows you to "Enable" the protocol for now, but further updates to the app may not allow that. The site is using a certificate but it is not a supported type: "SSL_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED_VERSION"
Quote from: Firefox
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. [emphasis added]

That's a good idea but I can't find any way to contact that site. I looked at the site map and ran dry.

Addendum: I went to http://babylon-software.com and found a way to email them for support, although it looks as if that is only for support for their paid software (which is not worth the exorbitant price). I did reset Firefox to enable it but I prefer Safari. It's not that there is no workaround, but it's a nuisance.

Given the following, I suspect you're looking at abandonware:

Last stable versions:

Windows: 10.5.0 (r4) / July 28, 2015; 5 years ago
Android: 4.1.2 / December 16, 2016; 3 years ago
IOS: 2.0.1 / February 14, 2013; 7 years ago

No software company that intends to stay in business goes that long between updates, and has a completely out of date website, complete with non-functional SSL...and no way to contact them. Sorry, but this is almost certainly an ex-parrot. Either that, or they've got a very strange business model. They are still traded on the Tel Aviv stock exchange and after years of steady decline in value (earnings decline of 70% over the past 5 years), the stock has gone way up this year. But darned if I can find any reason why that is so. One report I read said it had 20 employees and revenue of $1.37M USD. Nobody's getting rich on that - and keeping the lights on could be a challenge. https://simplywall.st/stocks/il/software/tase-bbyl/babylon-shares

I received an email from Babylon (I had reported the issue to them) that stated that they were referring this to their IT department. I'll post back with more news when it is available.
