iPad ios update

I have an iPad Air 2 currently operating in iPadOS 14.4.2.
I do NOT  have an iPhone, and don't plan to get one.

I would like to update before iPadOS 15 comes out.
But I don't want to use 2FA, which Apple is pushing very hard !!

Will I be able to avoid 2FA if I upgrade to iPadOS 14.7.1?  How?
What pitfalls should I look for to avoid?

Perhaps a review of the Apple Support page covering 2FA will be helpful. 

As you say, "Apple is pushing very hard !!" But as far as I know so are Google/Android/Windows/etc.

Not having any iPhone is not a problem. There is no need for any specific brand of "smart" phone, as far as I know. The only problem with non-Apple devices is that it cannot be used to set up 2FA... with Apple. You DO need a "trusted" Apple device to set up 2FA with Apple. However:

You can choose to receive the codes by text message or automated phone call [emphasis added].

You don't even need to involve Apple at all, there are apps available for all the common "smart" phone brands. Nor do you really need a "smart" phone, you already have a Mac that includes texting. The whole 2FA scheme really applies to mobile devices, since those are the items you are likely to lose. Someone can always break into your home and steal your Mac, but losing your phone is orders of magnitude more likely.

As for iOS 14.whatever, I can't help. I already have 2FA set up so there were no steps required to "setting it up" when I updated the OS.

BTW, you do understand that there is not a second password required with 2FA, right? Of course, if the device you use to receive the code requires a password, that device's password would be required if it is not open/running.

Hope I haven't confused you with my "understanding" of Apple's implementation of 2FA! I'm sure iny ererz will be corectd bye otherz!!

You answered your own question. “Apple is pushing it hard.” “Pushing” is not the same as “requiring”. So, Just don’t enable it.

I did get your point, but I simply tried to let you know that there are fewer rreasons to avoid it, and Apple is not “pushing” any more than all other modern OS makers and major developers. You mentioned not wanting an iPhone and I thought you saw that as part of the “push”. Apple would love for you to buy one , but it has nothing to do with using 2FA.

All my devices are up to date, and I don't have 2FA enabled on any of them. Now, I've done this so often it's automatic without paying much attention, so this is going from memory (which is often like a sieve), but there comes a point where you're asked to active 2FA, and there is a yes button and one that says OTHER OPTIONS (or something similar). I select that, than click the SKIP THIS STEP (or maybe it's DO LATER or whatever it says). That ends that when upgrading--although Apple often asks, and I just ignore for now.

If you can wait until I have to install another upgrade I could give you better wording. Sorry, this is the best I can do for you right now.

Got it!

A couple of days ago, I decided to go ahead with the iPadOS update.
I backed up to iCloud, and then proceeded with the update.
All went smooth.  NO mention of 2FA.

Process proceeded, with no hitches.

iPadOS v14.7.1 (18G82)

Took 38 minutes, and all appears to be well.

OK... Does this work with iPadOS 15.02 as well? Can't put off updating from iOS11.4.1 anymore but don't have 2FA on it and don't want it on 15.0.2 either. At least "this" machine will let me update it unlike my MacBook Pro... 15.0.2 shows up in Settings>General>Software Update.

I "think" I'm getting closer to possibly getting High Sierra on the MBP... not sure yet. Will probably mess with that on a clone first if possible.
