Total Video Downloader anyone?
« on: May 13, 2022, 11:18:23 AM »
I came across Total Video Downloader and I would like to know if anyone has used it. I am interested because, occasionally, I want to download a video from Facebook and have been unsuccessful with other apps.

Haven't heard of that one, Jon, but when I clicked, Safari told me the link was "Not Secure" so I'd be a bit wary of it.

I got that warning also but I downloaded and installed it. There was no caveat from Gatekeeper when I did that, although I have not launched it yet (I'm waiting for a Facebook video that I want to download).

I have had the "not secure" warning in the past from sites that I knew to be OK. Perhaps you were right to be cautious, but I did run MalwareBytes, which found no issues.

Much of the time it is simply because the site is still using "http" instead of updating to the more secure "https". That's one cause. That's also the reason you won't see any kind of "locked" indicator/icon along with the url in a browser's location box/field. You will notice that TS uses the new system. But it can require a lot of tedious work in a large site or at least the effort to make the change for a small outfit. :whistling:

However, when I opened the link in Safari, I had to copy the link into TextEdit to even see that the "http://"! Safari simply displayed "www.macvideostudio.com/total-video-downloader-mac.html"!Yes the "s" is missing, but why hide the whole format?! Thanks for nothing Apple! :wallbash:

Even if this 'company' includes malware in their apps, it may be nothing more than 'borrowing' your IP address. "What? Me worry?" :p However, the missing "s" is an indication, to me, that this is not a professional dev. Looking at the page source I see some (probably) Chinese characters. I suspect it is simply a 'foreign' knock off product. :dntknw:

Site is registered to a Chinese owner. May be ok, but never heard of the app and...

You don't actually need an app for that. ;)

Thanks, Paddy. Actually, I had seen that article before and followed the instructions; No dice. Insofar as Total Video Downloader is concerned, I launched the app and the only thing that appeared was a window asking to pay for it (no free trial, even though that window listed it). Consequently, I uninstalled it.

In another forum, I received this link: Top FaceBook Video Downloader for macOS (Monterey included) I tried the second app (MacX YouTube Downloader) and it did nothing. Since downloading FB videos is much less than a priority for me, I haven't experimented further.

Hey Jon - I just tried out the free option and it worked perfectly. I used Chrome, followed the instructions - there did seem to be an extra step/window in there (after step 9 - got a window with several videos and then when clicking on the one I wanted, it opened in a window with a black background all by itself, and I was able to download it no problem.

Here's the video I used (kind of interesting, actually - in Dutch though. ;) ) - here's the link for part way through the steps.

Perhaps it didn't work for me because I was using Safari. I don't have Chrome, mainly because I don't want to have anything to do with Google.
