USPS phishing message.
« on: July 12, 2022, 02:30:15 PM »
I have the USPS send me a message each day that shows an image of any mail coming to my physical mailbox. We quite often get mail that should have gone to others on our street. I know that some of our mail has gone to the same house number but on different streets. :whistling: So the morning email gives me a "heads up" that there may have been another "erer". :wallbash:

However, the USPS servers are probably no better protected than any other. There are reports of malicious messages claiming to be from USPS; I got one today:
Quote
From:USPostalService
Subject:USPS ticket No.3965

We've got a new message for you

An email containing confidential personal information was sent to you
Of course, the "from" url is not www . uspsoig . gov/...  :WOW:
All links resolved to "http: // miami . cvqualitybuilders.com / wp-content/..." Don't even care if that's a hacked site. Simply marking as SPAM in SPAMSieve.

Just another reminder: Never, EVER click a link in an email (nor a text message).

In a similar vein, don't be intimidated by scare tactics, particularly in robocalls. I have received recorded messages from "Amazon" telling me that I just bought a $1000 iPhone and alerting me to call back to verify. Caller ID, of course, shows a local phone number. In any event, Amazon does not call you, and a dead giveaway is that the recorded voice opens by saying "Dear Customer" instead of my name.  And, of course, Social Security and IRS will NEVER phone you to tell you that your account is being suspended or that you owe back taxes.

When you get a phone call like these, the best thing is to hang up. Do not call back and vent your anger: That only tells the robocaller that your number is viable. If an actual person calls, don't waste your time in invective. As soon as the call ends, the scammer simply goes on to the next victim.

The last fake Amazon email I got reported that I had bought a $999.99 item. I guess the SCAMmer didn’t think I’d fall for a $1,000.00 item.

Can't tell you how many times there have been warrants out for my arrest from the CRA (who, btw, do not send police to arrest you out of the blue), Canadian Border Services (allegedly because of a "suspicious package"), my credit card has been "suspended", Amazon has frozen my account because of a suspicious purchase, some package from UPS/unknown delivery service was undeliverable (these are almost entirely in Chinese...), and this is on top of the regular offers to clean my ducts or fix my ailing Windows computer. I no longer answer any call where I don't recognize the caller ID. Yesterday, for reasons unknown, I got SEVEN calls on my cell phone from various 647 numbers - all without names, of course and all scammers - none were answered. And to top it off, I got a call on the house phone from OUR number. Nice try.  <_<

The phone companies/legislators could stop all this if they really wanted to - outlaw autodialers, make it impossible to spoof a phone number etc.

We get so many spoofed calls from Autodialers, it’s become a real pain in the rear. Probably 3-4 times a day at times. We pick up the phone, sit in silence until they hang up. And then there is all of the above in this thread. Latest scam was a phishing email from some one who purported to be Meta Support claiming that one of our posts for the Chester Summer Music Series violated FB Community Standards and that if I didn’t respond within 24 hours our page would be deleted. Ha ha, Meta Business was sending me emails that the ad was running well within that time frame. It’s getting ridiculous out there.  :nono:

I had a text message to my cell phone saying that my PayPal account was suspended. Nobody except my wife knows that phone number! Naturally, I deleted the text. I also received a phone call on my land line from "Mark", who spoke with a distinct accent, claiming to be from "Immune Medical". I hung up on him.

One giveaway about scam calls is if there is a period of silence followed by a "boop" sound. That indicates that the call is being transferred to a scammer, likely in a foreign country.
