You will need more ram.  The processor should be OK.

I haven't used OS 9.1 in a while but I seem to remember it using something like 50-60 MB of ram just for the system on my 333 imac.

Ram, ram, ram.

8.6 will work on it, easily.  I ran it on the 6400 with 48, but again, more is better.

 OWC  has 64M for $25.00

 DataMem  has 64 for $19.00

 Coast to Coast -64-$19.43

From  Apple Specs
quote:
Memory

    * Comes with 32MB, 48MB, or 64MB of EDO RAM
    * Can be expanded to 128MB via 2 DIMM slots
* Uses 168-pin, noncomposite, 70-nanosecond or faster EDO DIMMs (1K or 2K refresh, 5 volt)

Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

Ran 8.6 on a 6300 with 48 MB and RamDoubler.
But that was when chips were well over $100.
Much better to have physical RAM as Jennie quotes.

No, you can't install the system folder from one of those utility disks. If you try you will probably come up with either a message saying the system cannot be copied or you'll get a question mark on startup. You will need an install CD with 8.5 or 8.6 or another drive, disk with a valid system folder installed onto it. Many of those machines had zip drives and you can get an 8.6 folder on a zip.
