Frances is hit by fearsome weather
« on: December 13, 2022, 08:50:51 AM »

Shetland has been hit hard by snow, so Frances is likely to be a victim. I have not tried to contact her as I'm sure she has enough to do. Main problem is snow has frozen on to overhead power cables and brought many down. Energy bosses said this morning there were 3,800 without power on the islands.

I didn't even know there were that many living there! Hope more of them are using wind power!
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

Six days with no power.

Life was basic.

We were lucky - or organised - this happened 20 years ago so we were ready!

Kitchen:
A rayburn (poor man's aga) that does constant hot water and also used as a cooker.  On all the time.
A gas cooker - cooking

Our bedroom is above the kitchen.

Sitting room:
Has a multi-fuel stove that can boil a kettle.

So we had most things covered really.  The other rooms were very cold, like the bathroom.

The community were fabulous. Looked after everyone - our local halls were open with free food, washing machines, etc. Someone even made it down our sheet-ice track to offer us hot soup.

Everyone was swapping phone numbers in case we needed towing out of snowdrifts, etc.  We were driving the car every day to feed four ponies and every tractor/4x4 driver insisted they would tow us if needed.

We have also been stock-piling candles, and batteries for 20 years too.

Our neighbours came for supper every night.  My ex-husband moved in too as he is disabled.  So we looked after those that needed it and managed.

Bloody cold though.  I even read three books and did crosswords!
