I need a shorter cable
« on: February 23, 2003, 12:00:00 PM »
I have recently changed the head unit for the sound system in  my truck.  I did this because I needed a unit with an auxiliary input.  I can now plug my  iPod directly into the truck sound system.  This has been working great with one exception.  The only cable I can find is six feet long! I don't need all that extra cable.   I got this one at Radio Shack.  I have tried 3 different Radio Shacks in three different cities... They carry nothing shorter.  The local Best Buy has nothing either.  I know I can buy the mini plugs and make my own, But I would rather not do that.

Does anybody have a good link to an online company that might have a shorter cable with a mini plug on both ends?

Steve: does this look like what you're looking for? Several shorter ones here - just did a Google search on "mini-plug cable".

Yeah but, cut it in half, get two plugs, and you've got two cables! I suppose you only need one.

How about a 1 foot cable? At our last MUG meeting, one of the door prizes was a 'cable' to connect one of those power 'bricks' to a regular power strip. It's a simple 1 foot long 'extension' cord. But it allows leaving the 'brick' on the floor instead of putting it on the strip. If you've ever tried putting more than one of these bricks on a strip, you probably noticed that the strip tends to list to one side (this allows electrons to spill onto the floor and is a major cause of static electricity!        ). Only problem is they are rather expensive ($4.77 + tax!). I'm thinking of just using some heavy wire and a little duct tape (recently purchased!). Just strip off enough insulation off the ends that go into the power strip, twist the other end around the plud on the brick, wrap with duct tape, stand back!

Look here (third item from top).
