Performa won't
« on: August 29, 2003, 08:09:21 AM »
I've got a Performa 6400/200 with a Sonnet Crescendo 400 card in it that I use as a backup. I haven't touched the thing all summer. Today I went to crank it up and the bootup begins, then stops for one of about 3 reasons.
Either:
A) Not enough memory
B) Illegal Instruction
C) Bus Error

I have 104 MB of RAM installed so that shouldn't be a problem. Even if I hold down the C key and try to boot from Norton I get a bomb dialog box that says "address error". I also cannot boot with the extensions off.
I've removed the logic board and reseated the RAM chips and even went as far as to swap in another logic board from another 6400 that I have kicking around.
Any ideas?

I recently picked up a beige G3 that was having some problems like take. What it turned out to be was a bad RAM stick (one the guy unstalled himself). So I would suggest you trying removing some sticks of RAM and seeing if that will help.

Funky.

How about a dead PRAM battery? My 6100s with Cresendo cards won't boot when ther's die.

Unless... I push the power button off and then back on, very fast.

Or maybe you better pop that thing open and make sure all your internal components are seated.

You could try removing and then re-inserting all the RAM an other "cards". It's possible some of the contacts have oxidized.

Also try "stripping it down" to the bare essentials required to boot. Unplug all peripherals, disconect from any network and pull the processor upgrade card out.

If that works, then slowly add the parts back in.

Good Luck!

The battery had crossed my mind. Mike's post reminded my that last winter or whenever it was that I increased the RAM something funny was happening for a while. Although I know for a fact that it has 104 MB the System Profiler would only show 96 or some lesser amount. Then suddenly it would show the 104. Might be a goofy RAM card. At least the logic boards are easy to yank on these old dogs.

Thanks everyone, I'm posting from the old 6400 right now. It would appear to be a bad DIMM as suggested. I had a 64, a 32 and the 8 soldered onto the board for a total of 104. I removed the 32 and replaced it with an old 8 I had laying around, reset the CUDA switch and here we are. This was after swapping DIMMs around, running without one and then the other, etc., etc.
Maybe now I'll shop for a cheap 64 someplace. This old dog is only a backup so I'm not dumping that much money into it.

Thanks kelly. Same price as some eBay places but they don't have the lifetime warranty like OWC. It seems to be doing OK with 80 MB right now so I just may wait. As I said before, it's only a backup in case the iMac goes down. Not like I run several things at once on it.
