Hi

I have managed to turn on the Multi user mode in MAC OS 9.1. Now on turning on the computer it asks for the "owner" password. I have no idea what it is as I didn't mean to turn it on in the first place.

I have tried holding down the space bar on boot up and turning it of, but it tells me that I do nat have the required access limit.

I do not have the instalation disks to hand as they are abroad.

Is there any way of turing this off ??????

Are you sure this is your machine? wink.gif

I don't know any way besides Booting from an OS CD.

You could then Delete Multiple User Preferences and others if needed.

If you can't borrow one here is one possibility.

Just one more thing if I may. I have just found through one of the guys at work the install and software restore CD's for OS 9.0.4. Perhaps a very silly question, but will this allow me to boot from the CD and then delete the multi user prefs from th HD, even though I am running 9.1

David. It depends on what machine you have and what kind of CD it is. smile.gif

Is your mac old enough to run on OS 9.04?

Machines can't Boot from an older OS than they came with.

And is this CD tied to a particular machine?

Some are.

You have nothing to lose by trying it.

If it doesn't work, look for a different one.

Just in case Anyone gets this problem in the future this is how I managed to correct it.

I booted from a MAC OS instaltion CD ( Unfortunatley I had to use a lower OS system ) but this worked fine.

Openend the control panel and moved the Mutliuser prefs ( File ) and the Mutli user ( Folder ) to the desktop.

Restarted the machine.

SUCCESS  - No more log in password.

There's nothing unfortunate about using an older OS.

It was apparently new enough to work.

David,  
I am new to this forum and just looking at some of the issues posted.  I just had a similiar problem and after booting up from the CD and  getting the multiuser disable. I booted from my reg hd and ran MAC OS setup assistant.  This will give you the opportunity to rename your computer as well as setting the owner password.
