problems with epson printers
« on: September 09, 2003, 07:55:49 AM »
i do  a relatively  small amount of printing, so I bought an epson c62 printer.  They replace one with a new one if it breaks down in a year. So far, three have broken down in the past three months.  Is this just a run of bad luck or have others had the same problem?  What printers do people recommend for light printing and occacional photographs?  Thank you.  ilw-00

I used to have a C-60, until it broke down.  The worst part about it was how expensive the ink was, and how frequently I had to replace them.  I now have a Canon i450, and I like a lot better.  Prints well, reasonably priced ink, and a lot quieter.

Hey ilw-00, for inexpencive occational printing I would buy another Brother Mulitifunction 5/1. It’s cheap to buy, the ink is very reasonable as well as lasting, and lasting a long time. It scans, copies, faxes, and prints.
I also have a Epson which has served me well, but since I’ve purchased the Brother’s 3100 the Epson is barely used.

My Epson Stylus Color 800 is 5 years old without a problem, could be luck on my part, hard tellin?

ilw-00,

I have several Epson ink-jets.  The 740s - overengineered - are still going strong after lo, these many years of extensive usage.  Worth more used that what I paid for them new.

And there's the C-82 - not quite a year old, now.  This is your C-62's faster/quieter elder sibling.

All going strong without problems.  No repairs.  No returns.  Cheap ink.

They have served me well.

Still - there are a few tricks to keeping Epson inkjets happy.

You may have just been exceptionallyunlucky - which I doubt.  Or the C-62 may be a lemon in the Epson line.

Or, a bit more likely, you may be unaware of the tricks needed to keep your Epson going strong.

You state:   << three have broken down in the past three months >>

I am impressed!

Could you state what has gone wrong with each printer?

Same pattern - or a different problem with each one?

We just might be able to get this figured out -

Regards,

Epaminondas

We use two older Epson printers, the 900 and the 980 - never have had a problem.  Also recently purchased an HP 7550 - so far no problem, but s-l-o-o-o-o-w!!!

Several years ago I bought inexpensive, for that time, epson and hp printers that worked well and give me no trouble.  The problems I have had with my current epson include the green light staying on and the red light flashes with the printer not working.  The manual suggests a  possible internal error.  I turned it off as suggested and nothing happened.  I repeated this over the next few days to not avail. The manual suggests contacting your dealer. Another probler was the ink cartridges only moved partially accross as if the line was defective or off track and nothing printed.  I am trying to decide what printer to buy next.  When I purchased my first epson years ago, I was told by a friend that the printers were great but the service wasn't.  Thank you.  ilw-00

ilw-00,

Nothing I know of to help you with there.

The usual problem with Epsons is print-head clogging - generally with those who do not use their printers very much or after a printer has been  in storage for a while - say after a summer vacation or after a move or such.

Occasional users should probably run their Epsons once a week or so - your milage may vary.  Otherwise the print head can dry out, particularly if you leave the printer on a lot without using it or if you turn the machine off via a surge supressor instead of using the power button on the printer (which moves the print head over to a pad that reduces drying out).

But it sounds like you have other things going on.

Good luck -
