"Hand" installed Type 1 Fonts & MS Office Headache

What's with this OS X and Fonts!  upset.gif

Open a font CD of Type 1 fonts and the "display" suitcases are disolved leaving all the individual display fonts floating around loose! And the printer fonts have the same icon so you can't tell what is what!

And what a lame "help" the help file is. Add fonts using "your" sofware program. Do I have to buy a program to do this? I use, and have used many font managers at work.

But this is for my daughters PowerBook, so I really don't want to spend any more money. And I only want to add a few more fonts that the standard Apple install and M$ Office install.

To add to the agony. When running office the font list used to be WYSIWYG. After manually adding a few fonts to the Fonts folder in the "library", some showed up, others did not. Two fonts were only showing up as bitmaps. I then removed the whole "family" folder of those fonts out. Now everytime I launch Word the fonts are NOT shown in ther "face", just listed in the menu sans serif, and NOT grouped by family! They are named by their short file name eg. "OB HelvUlBol".

One Last anoyance is the fonts folder is full of Asian fonts. This OS was the original factory install which was updated by the "Apple Genius" when we bought it two weeks ago. Are those TrueType fonts that I can just delete?

Thanks

A couple of suggestions/guesses-

Try this one first:

1. The following three files are known to become easily corrupt and cause a myriad of problems. Trashing these will cause them to be rebuilt and often fixes assorted ills. For sure it is worth a try and it cannot hurt.

Go to: user/library/preferences/Microsoft and then trash: Office Font Cache (10), Word Font Substitutes, and Word Settings.

Then, Repair Permissions.

If that does not resolve the issue, then try this:

2. If you start having problems with Office v.X, the quickest cure is to use the Remove Office utility in the Value Pack folder on the Office v.X install CD and remove everything. Then go back and re-install using the installer rather than drag and drop. Finally you can reapply all the updates. Unless you do that it is highly likely you will leave traces behind and those traces will get you every time. (thanks to joemikeb@MFI)

Just curious, in which Library did you install the fonts, and how?

After you have finished with the above, it would be a ideal time to run DiskWarrior (if you have it) and run Disk Repair.

And as always, a backup or two can't hurt.

HTH

Thanks Folks!

Printed out your info and will try it tonight.

Harv, I was wondering about WHICH Fonts folder I dropped the files in. I thought it was the right one. But it WAS late.

Anyways my fonts CD was from the 90's. They're MonoType fonts.

I simply dragged a chosen fonts folder into the "Fonts" folder and that was that.

I'm trying to like OS X. But boy, it's testing my patience!

OK back to "normal"!

Followed pendragon's reciepe #1.

I double checked to find I was adding/deleting fonts from the (drive)>Library>Fonts.

I yanked all the weird named fonts like "#Gungseouche.dfont" out and double buried them in a "font storage" folder I created in the library. This folder has all Type 1 fonts I don't want active - yet.

However, I was getting Asian fonts in my lists!  upset.gif

I then did a search and found a Fonts folder in my OSX System>Library. I opened it and low and behold, there were those Asian fonts!

That folder is locked too!  upset.gif

I made a new post about what I believe is me loging in as ROOT. Or not.

I don't know!
