The no-Mac CD
« on: March 01, 2003, 08:07:00 PM »
So i made it to Paris. My wife had a company-lent IBM laptop (boo!) that i figured would be a great CD player, if i bought my 900th set of computer speakers to go with it. So 29 euros later, i have a nice little stereo system and went to buy some Django Reinhardt.
So Fnac has a new double-Cd set that looked good. I noticed on the back it had a warning label, which stated in symbols that it would play on home stereos and Windows systems but would not play on Macs or "other systems."
I wondered how it could do that, and for 18 euros found out.
On the IBM, when a regular music CD is inserted, the Windows Media player (a deluxe version complete with Itunes-like visuals) fires up and starts playing.
When the Django disc is put in, it launches it own no-frills player. THis player is apparently PC only, so it wont run on Macs or "others."
So that's how it's done.

This may shed a little light on the subject.

Just be glad you didn't get this kind of protected disk! Many related links here, also.

Here's what Apple warns about this technique.

The one you got sounds more like a 'colaboration' between M$ and the record indutsry. 'We'll provide you a great way to gain market share/sales and it will only cost you a few of your first born.'
