Installing larger HD in Tibook?

I am awaiting arrival of a larger HD for my TiBook. I will also have an enclosure for the HD which I will be removing.

I have a bootable version of OS X on an external firewire HD, so my thinking is that I can remove the smaller HD, put it in the enclosure, and then, while running off the external drive, move my system onto the newer, large drive.

Am I overlooking anything in this plan?

Sounds good. I just replaced the HD in my powerbook so that I can send off the other one to get fixed.

Do you have the instructions on how to do it? It's very easy..only need a T8 Torx screwdriver and a towel.

Yes, I have printed out instructions from xlr8yourmac.com. Plus, I did this 3-4 years ago on my Wallstreet. Also, I have replaced RAM on several occasions.

Still, I get a bit nervous tampering like this and try to think it through beforehand.

It sounds like you know how to get the drive out with no problem. Make sure that you have connected the drive with the cable oriented in the right direction. Some drives and cables are keyed and some are not. The toshiba drive I got for my TI was not and could easily be plugged in backwards. It did not hurt when I tried it backwards. I would test it before putting the bottom cover back on. It was not clear what the plans are for the old one.  You could put it in an enclosure for a 2.5"drive easily. If the external enclosure is for a 3.5" drive the cables and mounting is different. You can get a cable adapter, but you still will have to secure the drive from moving around.  I recently bought one of the following enclosures for may old 2.5" drive out of my TI.

I was not sure if you were planning on trying to copy your stuff over. If you cannot drag an OS X system and have it be functional. You can clone it with Carbon Copy Cloner. I would start with a new install and re-install all of the applications.

I recently replaced my jard drive in my Tibook. there are a couple of tricky parts.

First, getting the mounting screws through the rubber anti-shock grommets and the plastic anti-short unit can be a pain. To avoid this put a dab of rubber cement around the holes on the mounting plate, stick the grommets into the holes, and then the grommets will not fall out when you mount the HD.

Second, I found putting the back plate on and getting all the screw holes lined up to be a problem. What I did was take some small pieces of spring wire whose diameter was slightly snaller than the screw holes and place one in each hole to ensure all 12(??) screws were lined up.

Sadly, the hard drive I bought failed and blew out my 128 MB RAM chip too. The moral is to buy only a top grade HD (pay the extra few bucks) - IBM was my choice.

My installation went as smoothly as one could hope. I followed the suggestion of one of the Apple Store's geniuses and put my new drive in the enclosure first.
Then I CCC'd what I wanted over to it.

Then I just switched out the drives.

The only problem which arose was that I couldn't use iView MediaPro to show some recently shot Nikon NEF files. Drove me crazy.

Well, it turned out to have nothing to do with the drives, but rather with a update for NikonView software which I had done a day or two earlier.

So my lesson learned was not to attribute problems to the most recent change, but to think about what else I have been doing recently.

Another important point for me was to use the same names for the partitions on my new drive as the ones I had been using before. By doing this I ensured that Applescripts, etc., were not confused.

I've been using the old drive, still in the enclosure, exclusively for music files now, having changed it to a single partition and renaming it.
