maintenance floppies
« on: October 27, 2003, 05:46:53 PM »
Good evening everyone,

Long time no post, but here's the scoop.  This past weekend my wife purchased a 580CD running OS 7.6, plus a 4/600 laser writer for $45 (can).  She simply wants it for word processing, and she loves the older Mac as it can use Word 5.1, her favourite.  I am looking to get some maintence programs, such as DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Norton Utilities.  They can be on floppies or CD and can run on a 68040 chip.  Any ideas where I could get my hands on these programs?

Hmmmmm. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm not sure that what you heard is what I actually meant!

NexComp has an auction on ebay for Norton 4.0.

I've bought from them and find them reputable and easy to deal with.

There is another 4 and a Version 3

Lowendmac has lots of information.

And Sun Remarketing has a LOT of older software.

Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

Many may disagree with me, but I would reconsider  buying anything you don't absolutely need for a 68K mac. I mean think about it  the hard drive is Tiny.  You say yourself that you only want to use it for word processing. Just get the system set up the way you want it and burn a copy to a CD/Zip what ever. Or,  if you ever have a problem, wipe the drive and reinstall.  On that small a drive that would probably be a lot faster than any utility you could buy.  It would also be foolproof.

With today's huge hard drives and complex systems that can take several hours to install (not to mention replacing gigabytes worth of Data)  disk repair utilities make sense.

On a   580CD 68K mac that probably isn't even worth the $45 dollars you paid for it (I bought a quadra 650 on ebay 3 years ago for $25) The utilites may not make sense.

Do not misunderstand me I like the idea of making use of an old mac, Just be careful about spending too much money on it.   wink.gif
