How did you ultimately install Panther?

Like others, I first jumped in with an Upgrade install. But then, with a back filled with arrows, I found that I had printing problems, so I had to reinstall via the Archive & Install method. BTW, there now is a third party fix for that printing problem. Even so, my recommendations are now in favor of the Archive & Install method. biggrin.gif

I installed first on my G4 Powerbook, just doing an upgrade. Caused problems. Couldn't fully boot, and I don't keep much on this machine. Only use it when I go away. So I wiped the drive and installed fresh and reinstalled everything that was on there and it runs better than it ever did. So I decided to do the same thing on my desktop G4, wipe and install. Just takes some time. I have three drives in the desktop and I use CCC every other week to another drive, so I wouldn't lose anything. After doing the wipe and install and installing all my apps fresh, this machine also runs much better. Well worth the time doing it this way if you have the capacity to backup things you can't replace.

Well *cough* I did first install the final beta by doing just an "upgrade" then finally my Panther package came so then I did the Archive and Install. Both were working great so I just tossed the old system stuff that the installer created. So far so good!

I keep a backup of the work files that I don't want to lose. I figured that if worse came to worse, I would have been forced to start from scratch. So I did an update.

Before I proceeded with the update, I ran Disk Repair and Repair Permissions from the Panter install disk.

I had to reformat the drive to be rid of an OS 9-compatible security program that is installed at the driver level of the harddrive...

I joined the ranks of Panther by the archive method.
Did this at two in the morning.
Turned my S-Jag (which I just changed the name to Panther) partition into panther.
Ran permissions and all the other utilities first.
Then just installed Panther on top of jag.
Ran permissions afterwards etc etc.
Haven't had a chance to look around yet but did test the printer. The old tank 740 works fine.
Will later today.

BTW. I ran Nortons 'speed disk' from a bootable CD on Panther when it was first installed (thinking if it goes bonkers, so what) and it ran just fine.

Permissions seems a bit slower in Panther than 10.2.8.

Downloaded an update of a third party software that's compatible with Panther and it d/ld a lot faster on dial up.

Well first thing is, I got Panther for only 65.00... biggrin.gif and me so, so HAPPY!

Then I did the upgrade process from my old 10.2.

Well I didn't like the out come, and then I saved all my important things on my ext. usb HD. and did a clean install.

It works faster and better than doing the upgrade option.

I don't have Mac OS 9 installed and think it's time to have a burial for it. sad.gif  me so, so sad...

but I feel it's time to actually move forward and stop lingering in the past with OS 9.

All my external devices are all OS X and PC compatible.

Thank you APPLE for doing a great JOB on Mac OS PANTHER!

I did the upgrade and installed the patch for the printer troubles, and haven't a problem anymore.  However, I think now that I'm a little more familiar with this black cat, I'm going to do an archive and install and see if if makes that much difference.

Used Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the entire 10.2.8/10.2.6 drive on the Powerbook and the Sawtooth (never did get around to updating the Sawtooth to 10.2.8...too darn busy!) and then used the straight upgrade option. Worked like a charm. Repaired permissions both before and after just to be sure. I messed around with the printing on the Powerbook in an effort to enable network printing wirelessy, and managed to screw up the wired printing too, but it works fine now, after some fiddling and an all-important restart. I've given up (for now) on the wireless printing...it wasn't a necessity. I'm sure if I wanted to spend time I don't have, I could get it work eventually, but there are other priorities!

Expose is my favorite feature so far - it's a dream come true for someone like me who typically has multiple documents open, with content to be copied and pasted into web pages! There have been days when I've had as many as 15 GoLive web pages open at the same time...along with the same number of Word documents. (no, not the most efficient thing, but some days are like that, with updates coming in thick and fast) Good thing I have a 22" monitor!! wink.gif

Paddy, when I tried, for the first time, to print from my Powerbook via the WiFi LAN, I couldn't...until I realized I wasn't choosing the correct printer. Even though I only use one. laugh.gif

The print dialog showed the correct printer, however, I failed to choose the shared printer on the  LAN.

Karl, I don't have that option on my list. How, exactly, did you get it to work? And are you using a print server? I have an HP print server (JetDirect 500X) and it handles an HP Laserjet 2100 and an HP Deskjet 960C. No problems with a wired connection from either Macs running various flavors of 9 and X or PC's running XP, but no dice with the wireless. I used to be able to print to the HP 960 wirelessly (I think) but that was a while ago and I seem to have messed things up. Never could get both of them working. I've tried just about every option under the sun, including CUPS, too...

When I get the time, I may post over at MacFixit in the hopes that John Strung will be able to walk me through it, unless one of you here has the magic potion!

BTW, my D-Link wireless router doesn't have a built-in print server, though I've read that the ones that do only work with Macs printing to a Postscript printer.

Paddy, here's my setup, if memory serves me, it's similar to yours:

G4 /350 Sawtooth, self powered "no-name" USB hub into which I have the Epson CX5200 connected. The LAN consists of a D-Link 614+ WiFi router. The G4 Tower is "hard wired" with CAT5 to the router. The 12" powerbook has the Airport Extreme card.

Both the G4 Tower and the G4 Powerbook have USB printer sharing enabled, but in reallity only the Tower needs to have it enabled.

I added the printer to both the G4 Tower and the PB via the PrintCenter Utility in Jag, and when I did the Panther upgrade (on the PB only), it kept my prefs, so in Panther I didn't have to do anything to the PB.

I don't know why you're not getting the "shared" printer option, I have it in Jag and Panther. Maybe there's a place to set up a shared printer through Print Center or the Print&Fax CP in Panther...but I was unable to find it now.

Maybe the difference is that your printer is shared via USB and printer sharing - mine are both on a networked print server. The thing is - the computer sees the printer server - I "pinged" it no problem using the Network Utility, but I can't get anything to print. I get "printer not responding". sad.gif
