Have you/are you running 10.2?

Did your USB go flooey with the plain jane Jaq install?

Have you done the 10.2.6?  10.2.8?

Does your Appletalk work over your ethernet?

Do you have to use crossover cables to use the ehternet?

Do you find your self constantly adjusting the track lights so they shine just right on you design marvel?
Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

jepinto,

 >Have you/are you running 10.2?

Yep, sure am.

>Did your USB go flooey with the plain jane Jaq install?

No USB problems.

>Have you done the 10.2.6? 10.2.8?

All the way to 6.2.8. I am assuming that will be the last one.

>Does your Appletalk work over your ethernet?

Dunno. Haven't needed it. I am hesitant to turn it on. Don't wanna mess up a good thing.

>Do you have to use crossover cables to use the ehternet?

Nope. USB and Firewire peripherals work just fine.

>Do you find your self constantly adjusting the track lights so they shine just right on your design marvel?

Now you have hit on my major problem. When I get the light just right on my Cube then there is a glare on the screen. I can't decide whether to re-adjust the lights or put up with the headache.

Well, I'm hoping the update to 2.6 will fix the USB problems.  Just all of a sudden, it doesn't like the USB hub.  When I started in single user mode, hoo boy,  sweatingbullets.gif  did I get some error messages!  Yes, I know, I just haven't wanted to go all the way to 2.8, to see if my ethernet problems were a certain build, or was a "Cube" thing.

Ain't it awful what we C U B E owners have to go through trying to not show off (or up) the rest.

Why would you start in "single user" mode?

Are you sure those were "error" messages? The single user mode is a very low level startup, just the kernel and not much else.

The verbose mode (command+V) will give you text feed back on a full startup, the same info that will be contained in the /var/log/system.log. Startup messages can also be obtained through the Terminal by typing dmesg.

What are you upto Jennie?  biggrin.gif

I'd done better to say "started up by holding command S" (whadda I know?) 'cause I thought the machine needed a fsck -y.

That's when I sw all those white letters on black, saying stuff about USB this and USB that, then something or other about "Apple Driver" then generic, then a bunch more.  And starting up regularly with the keyboard plugged into a Belkin hub, the mouse which is plugged into the keyboard, works, but the keyboard doesn't.

I'll start up regularly tomorrow and let you know wot happens.

fsck -y just checks file system consistency, I'd get rid of the keyboard in the hub business. Plug it into the machine direct. How many USB ports does the "cube" have anyway? I have a powered hub for everything else, but the kbrd goes into the machine itself.

Don't worry about all that scrolling text during a "single user" startup, they're not really "error" messages, that's the boot process in "verbose" mode instead of the pretty blue progress bar. wink.gif

PowerLogix offers 1.4GHz Cube upgrade
By Peter Cohen pcohen@maccentral.com
October 31, 2003 7:45 am ET

Okay, you've modified your Power Mac G4 Cube with one of Mac upgrade maker PowerLogix's PowerCube enclosure, now what to do? The company has announced its PowerForce G4 1.4GHz upgrade, which replaces the Cube's existing processor.

Based on the new 7457 processor, the new PowerForce 1.4GHz upgrade draws 40 percent less peak power than previous processors. What's more, it has twice the Level 2 Cache (512K) of previous cards as well. It also incorporates 2MB of Level 3 Cache. Compatible with all Power Mac G4 Cubes, the new PowerForce G4 1.4GHz card uses PowerLogix's Series 100 card design.

PowerLogix expects that the first production units of its new PowerForce G4 1.4GHz system will begin shipping in 1 - 2 weeks. Suggested retail pricing is US$599.

=====

I have read that it will not boot into System 9, but, just think, a 1.4GHz Cube!

Wow!

I know you're going to thin we Cube owners are an odd bunch (gee, it even feels great to type that!) but the keyboard cord won't reach all the way to the top of the cresenda that I have the Cube prominently displayed upon.

Cube has 2 USB ports, plus two USB ports on the monitor.  Mouse plugs into keyboard, keyboard into hub, hub into computer.  Speakers into monitor's USB.

Belkin 4 port powered Hub also has external drive.  Epson 740 is plugged into computer's other USB port.

Unless I can stretch that keyboard cord, it's the only fit, without having to move the keyboard to the desktop instead of the desk's keyboard tray.
