Not having TTP 4 yet, does anyone have suggestions how to keep Panther purring?

Mayo, I've been running OS X for almost two years now, and don't think I've ever had to use either Disk Warrior or TTP on it. I repair permissions after installing new software, and think I've done a fsck -y or two, but that's about IT. DW and TTP only get the very occasional workout on the pre-X machines (most recently my hubby's Lombard). And I use my G4's (upgraded Sawtooth & Tibook) a LOT - we're not talking once around the block on Sundays...wink.gif

Maybe I'm just lazy, but going on the "if it ain't broke" principal seems to have worked fine so far!

I'm with Paddy...

Panther is capable of taking care of itself for the most part. Repairing permissions after a new install or if any flakiness is detected will take care of most all problems you will encounter.

If you experience bigger problems, you have Disk Repair which can be run from the Panther installer disk. The system has to be pretty messed up before running fsck is a necessity.

I keep a copy of DiskWarrior and Drive 10 handy, but the only third party utility I use regularly is Cocktail to force the system to run cron scripts once a week.

With journaling enabled even fsck -y isn't needed. In fact it won't run you have to force it with fsck -f instead.

I run Cocktail every couple weeks just to clear caches and that's about it.

Mayo,

I repair permissions after installing any programs and run MacJanitor to run the cron scripts on a monthly basis, then repair permissions again. I have run Diskwarrior about 3 times, once after just installing OSX.2.8 and had a lot of fragmentation because of the new install, the other 2 times I had less than 1% fragmentaion but it did fix some custom icons and stuff.

I'm not running Panther yet but 10.2.8 pretty much takes care of itself. I love to watch Diskwarrior 3 do it's thing checking over 4,000.000 files in about 10 minutes.  wink.gif
