Extension loading order
« on: November 10, 2003, 12:53:01 PM »
I know if I add a space at the front of something in the Apple Menu, it will move to the top in the pull down list. Does the same trick work for loading an extension sooner at startup? If not, what's the secret to doing that? Also, what do I need to do if I want a particular extension to load near the end?

I've never had an extension conflict that I know about, and may not now either, but I want to give this a try. I do have a very old version of Conflict Catcher, which I've never used on my G3 since Apple came out with Extensions Manager.

Yup, that space in front of the extension name trick works for getting it to load first. I used to have to use it with a Sonnet Crescendo extension on my old Performa 6400 until Sonnet's last update on the extension. It now appears at the top of the extension list and loads first automatically.
As far as getting it to load at or near the end, I believe you can just place a "z" or "zz" before the extention's name. I think they're pretty much in alphabetical order. I'm on an iMac with Jag right now, so I can't just pop open a folder and check for you. If I fire up the Performa I'll get back to you unless someone else can jump in with a response in the meantime.

sluggo is right, the z's will put a file at the end but the (`)will put it after the z's , a (~) even later, and a (diamond shape, option+shift+v in Geneva) will come at the very end.  Numbers come before letters, but the (*) comes before numbers, though after spaces.

Got that???    wacko.gif

Note: I couldn't actually type the diamond shape cause I guess it isn't an ASCII character. It came out in the post as (?).

Thanks. Maybe I'll have time to put a space in and restart a week from next Saturday. I don't know if it will help.
