Loving Safari!
« on: November 09, 2003, 02:19:25 PM »
I've been on a Surfing Safari the past week and it has been a delight.  I had to finally give up Netscape because apparently too many websites were designed with only Internet Explorer in mind and I couldn't put up with the resulting problems any longer.

Safari hasn't crashed once, compared with regular crashes experienced with IE.  It even works with my online banking; the Mac version of Explorer didn't work for some time after the service first became available.

I'm glad that Apple decided to create its own web browser and to quit relying on third-parties for compatible browsers.  I think that it is another selling point for switching to an OS that is clearly superior to Windows.

I have been enjoying Safari, too. It seems considerably faster then Internet Explorer (just my general impression, no statistics to back that up). Haven't had crashes, either. However, I am not impressed with the Mail application--maybe I just need to use it more often.

My Eudora compatriots advised me against using Mail, and so far Eudora has worked great in Panther.  I had to give up browser-based e-mail apps years ago because they aren't powerful/flexible enough for my needs.  Ditto using browsers to manage my bookmarks...with almost 3000 bookmarks in my collection typical browsers choke and die immediately.

Safari also seems faster to me.  TechSurvivors still loads slowly, particularly the first time I bring it up.  TS may be the slowest website I visit on a regular basis.

Have you tried Camino yet Mayo?

Being on dialup Camino loads faster than Safari for me.

When I moved up to OSX.2.8 the other day I began to fool around with Safari. I was surprised that it seemed to be quicker than IE. I want to play a bit more with it--give it a real test drive--and then who knows--it could become the default browser. I haven't had a chance to try out some of the features like tabbed browsing, etc.

Bill, I have never even heard of Camino!  I know of an El Camino though...

Since I have a broadband connection everything seems bloody quick when I am online these days.

I've been using Camino full-time for nearly a year now and I think it is one great browser. Safari is my backup. Long ago, I was dedicated to iCab,, which I still have. IE is nearly forgotten.

For me, Camino was my first experience with Tabs, which I love. Development seems to have slowed to a crawl--there used to be nightly builds. So there may come a day when I switch to Safari.

It's amazing how quickly Safari is becoming the defacto browser on the Mac.

I like Camino as my backup with IE a distant third. Ahhh, the days of Mosaic and Netscape gone forever...how times change in the computer world. wacko.gif

And add me to the list of those who have made Safari my default browser. I worked it over last night--and every site I go to loaded up faster. I'm really starting to love the tabbed browsing, the way the bookmarks can be set up at the top in folders, and the blocking of the pop-up ads. (I went to a few sites that bomb me with those ads. It worked perfect. smile.gif)

My $.03 -

Eye bean using Safari for about tree muntz now, and it berry quickly (w/in the 1st week?) became my default browser.

Every wuntz inna wile (maybe six or eight timez in toto sintz eye maid 'da swich'), sum site will cause Safari to QWW or simply will not woik properly, and then I fire up IE, brush off the thick layer of dust that haz accumulated, say 'hello, old friend', and accomplish my 'bizniz' at that site.  Then itz back on Safari fur an udder cup-pull o' eeks...

One thing I miss when using Safari is the inability to effectively manage the browser cookies.  While I can choose to delete some or all of the collected cookies, I cannot tell Safari to retain some cookies until I choose to delete them at a later time.

When I was using Explorer I used Cookie Dog to keep often-used cookies like the TechSurvivors log-in cookies and to delete everything else.  And, so far, I have been unable to locate a similar cookie management program written for Safari.

I can only hope that either Apple or a third-party developer will bring this cookie management component to Safari.  I used Safari's built-in bug report function to suggest adding better cookie management to Safari; maybe someone at Apple will also think that it is a good idea.
