I'd like recommendations for a CDRW

I'm just beginning to look into getting a gently used external USB CDRW to use with an iMac G3 450 DV.

I'm particularly interested in personal anecdotal recommendations of specific models that work well w/ Jaguar, iTunes, and Toast 5 Titanium (and also any models and brands to avoid).

LaCie makes REALLY good drives.

If I were you, I'd look into firewire drives rather than USB. USB is the slowest interface you can get. Firewire drives will burn much faster.

If you can find a Yamaha Firewire drive, I'd go for that. I have one and it works great with Toast, iTunes, Jaguar and Panther. Never have had an error burning.

Gently used?

You can pop an internal ATA/IDE CD (or DVD) burner into an external case (saw a USB2, Firewire combo case for $45 new!).

Just make sure it has a removable plate to allow the tray to pop out.

This is can be way cheaper than any pre-built - if you buy a used internal unit and get an on-line case (see DealMac).

OR, wait for an Office Max, Staples, CompUSA "deal"  for a new burner.

What you'll need to be careful about is getting a drive that will be recognized. Toast should be able to do the trick for you though.

I wouldn't invest in a USB either, I've got one and it's slooooow. That is unless you can run USB 2. I'd go for a Firewire drive. Listen to the Cowboy.

Big K, yamaha dropped out of support some time back. Still great burners though.
Lacie kicks also.
Mine are firewire. I've seen usb in action. Not too impressed.
