Connection problems

Since upgrading to ADSL I find Sherlock cannot access channels, iTunes cannot find any radio stations and I can receive mail but can't send any (Mail error reports port25 timed out). Sherlock reports no internet connection is present, but everything seems to be ok (Safari works just fine). iTunes attempts to refresh the category list, but doesn't seem able to.
All worked fine with my previous dial-up service.
Have I missed some setting somewhere.
I have a G4 733MHz PowerMac running OSX 10.2.8.

IMO, you should start by calling your current internet service provider and describe your probs.   They should be able to talk you through checking the various settings to ensure that all are correct (or not) and alter them if need be.

Once you have done this, if they are unable to get your probs resolved, post again.

Max:  Are you connected directly to the modem, or are you using a router?

Try direct coneection, first.  If it works, it's a setting in the router.  Most DSL providers use PPoE and the router's default is DHCP.

The router's set up wizard can lead you through the steps, but each router has it's own pecularities.  You will have to call your ISP to confirm just what information they require in the set up.

Mine requires PPoE, and in the setup window for PPoE, the username has to be entered as "user@isp.net" with the password entered twice.  And funnily enough, the password MUST be between 6 and 8 characteres, no more, no less.  I'm now working on a DLink that appears to not want "user@isp.net" but instead wants username then three blocks down "@isp.com".  I'll know more later today when I try AGAIN

It took us two weeks to figure this out with Tech Support from the router company, and finally a supervisor from the ISP.  We could surf, but slowly, and we got a lot of time outs.

Another thing to check is if the router is blocking ports that are used by the programs that are not working.  You may also want to check in the sharing system preference under the Firewall section to make sure you are not blocking anything.  Your ISP could be blocking ports too, you may want to ask when you call them.
