MS Word Spell Check Gone
« on: December 30, 2003, 01:05:57 PM »
Followed the steps we took last time spell/grammar check disappeared http://www.techsurvivors.net/forums/index....&f=1&t=3917&hl=  The spellcheck icon shows up on the toolbar, but when I select it, a message appears that "spellcheck is not installed on your computer". What's with that? Running OS 10.2.6. Have the original Office X install disk. Should I drag Office to the trash and reinstall? And/or the preferences? And if so, which prefs? Why does the spellcheck want to take a powder so often?
Thonk yea (no spellcheck avaylubull),
Joan

jjoan, A few things to try-

The following three files are known to become easily corrupt and cause a myriad of problems. Trashing these will cause them to be rebuilt and often fixes assorted ills. For sure it is worth a try and it cannot hurt.

Go to: user/library/preferences/Microsoft and then trash: Office Font Cache (10), Word Font Substitutes, and Word Settings.

Then, Repair Permissions.

If that doesn't work-- (I doubt this will solve the problem as I understand it, but it may be worth a try)

The Project Gallery feature, which opens up by default on launch, is very buggy and can cause Word to crash.

So, open any Word document so that you can get to the Preferences, then:
1. On the Word menu, click Preferences, and then click General.
2. Disable/clear the Show Project Gallery at startup check box.
3. Save changes and quit Word.

And if that (also) fails to help--

Use the Remove Office utility in the Value Pack folder on the Office v.X install CD and remove everything. Then go back and re-install using the installer rather than drag and drop. Finally you can reapply all the updates. Unless you do that it is highly likely you will leave traces behind and those traces will get you every time.

When/if you elect to remove & reinstall, please ensure you first have backups of all your important data.

Also, upgrading to 10.2.8 may be of help…

UH OH, guess I was stretching the truth....I have the install disk but it isn't the original one, and the Value Pack isn't on it. I'm going to go to that computer's location tomorrow (New Years's Day). I know she doesn't have the project gallery when she launches Word, we disabled that right away. We'll do the preferences & repair permissions, I hope that'll do it. I can't just drag Microsoft Office out of her applications folder and into the trash, right? Rats. Rats.   sad.gif

jjoan, It's my understanding that to remove MS X by any other means other than the MS Office Uninstaller is just asking for problems. So the short answer is yes, use the uninstaller, unless you want to manually remove all the pieces, and this can be quite a chore. Details for both the automated and manual removal techniques are at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...product=macoffx

And of course, remember the backups, and after a new Office install (with updaters), Repair Permissions.

I think she'll just switch to Appleworks, and save her documents as Word (to send documents to others). I had no idea this was so tricky and scary. What is the problem with Microsoft? It's just like Quicken, I hate it but I can't live without it. Happy New Year, and I don't know what I'd do without this board, really. Enables me to turn the anxiety knob down at least eight notches (out of ten).

jjoan, Before throwing in the towel, you may care to do a search or post this issue on the special MS Office X Forum at MFI http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/postlist...=&Board=OfficeX

Updates: went to Mac Fixit forums, http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showthre...=&o=&fpart=&vc= they also told me to uninstall and I DO have a legitimate and legal copy of Office:mac Student and Teacher edition, so I thought it would be a piece of cake to uninstall Office with the uninstaller. But it won't uninstall the version I have on that computer. It finds the applications, the preferences, and fonts, and says they have been moved to the trash but NO WAY. Trash can is empty. Is this a dead end? Right now, she's composing in Appleworks, running spellcheck, then saving as a Word document, extra steps that are annoying.

jjoan, I am a long way, a very long way from knowing the ins & outs of MS, but it may be that when MS says they moved some thing from the trash, they do not mean that literally, merely that the applicable MS files are no longer accessible. You might try doing a Find on one of the "deleted"  MS files and see if it still exists.

Maybe someone else will soon chime in with some sage counsel.

All the MS applications were accessible. I restarted after doing the uninstall, clicked a document created in Word, and up it came, and its alias was/is still in the dock, and the Office folder on the hard drive contains all the apps.   huh.gif

jjoan, Sorry my helpful advice wasn't. Sure sounds like the Uninstaller didn't, but I don't know why, unless it is as you mentioned, somehow the Uninstaller is the wrong one for the MS you have installed.
