Hi!

My friend is working on a photo CD-ROM for a charity organization, user will insert the CD into either Windows, Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. The Macromedia Director's projector (I'm not sure if it's still call projector) will play the photo slide show.

The problem is color. He scan the photo using Nikon Scanner connected to a PC. He later adjust the color of the photo using another (more powerful) PC and when he got the color right at the PC and view the photo using my Mac. The color displayed at my TiBook laptop is different again.

I know as a Mac user I should know how to solve this but I'm never in this 'color' business.

User who view his CD will be from different platform, using diffrent monitor (or LCD) and graphic card. How can he make sure the color of the photo viewed on both Mac and PC will remain the same?

I'm sure someone (like tacit) will come along and give you a technically proper answer.

However, based on my experience and reading I don't think that it is possible to truly be sure it's the same color since you don't have control over how the monitors are set by the people viewing the photos. And the program that views the photos will have different color management properties or none at all.

Gamma settings vary from monitor to monitor and from OS to OS. Even from Mac to Mac in the same OS the colors will be different. I suppose there are some things that could help to make it less variable and I hope one of our color management pros comes along to give their advice.

Krissel has it exactly right. The question to how you can make images look the same on any platform or monitor is: You can't. the person who figures out how to do this will be a billionaire.

Make the images look a bit too dark on a typical uncalibrated PC monitor, and they'll be a trifle too light on a Mac. That's the way the cookie crumbles; Web developers have to deal with this, too.

Web designers often use a 2.0 gamma for images, averaging the 1.8 Mac and 2.2 PC gammas.
