Yep, the cable guy was here today and wired my house.  smile.gif

...though I ended up supplying a stepladder, hammer, screw hook...???

I have the D-Link 614 which was recommended by several TSers in another thread.
Hooked up the modem first and signed on to the ISP (OptimumOnline), surfed a bit and  checked download speeds (varied between 1.4 and 4 MB depending on where server was located).

I can't believe how simple it was. The most difficult part was finding my account number on my installation bill. It was nothing like the one in the example in the sign on window and the blocks didn't match. And they spelled my last name wrong but I had to use it anyway or it wouldn't go through.
Ah, there must be some of my former students working there... rolleyes.gif

Anyway now I can go to some of those sites you all post with the big movie files.   toothgrin.gif

Any maybe, just maybe, I might get to bed earlier.... whistling.gif

Congratulations... we've only recently got on to broadband and we love it. Internet radio and Apple's trailer site. And if you want to check out what movies are going the rounds in the UK, check out
http://film.guardian.co.uk/trailerpark/ (includes QT option).
Enjoy.

Switching from dial-up to cable is like turning onto an interstate highway after driving on a rutty dirt road...

Boy, are you going to LOVE the difference!

Thanks for the links...I ended up at Apple's page with all the movie trailers...wholly..!!! ohmy.gif

As an odd coincidence, while waiting for the cable guy to show I fiddled around with the spaghetti of wires behind my setup and repaired a connection to stereo speakers that were sitting idle.

Wow, listening to the surround music and watching those movie clips was great. clap.gif

Too tired tonight but I plan on enjoying an evening of sight and sound one of these nights.  smile.gif Got to get me some popcorn.

Well, kelly, it took me months to talk myself into the expense but in the long run it will save me time and frustration. One thing I did notice, depending on which site, was an uneveness of speed that was exaggerated more than it was on dialup. Most every site was slow before, now the ones that still are pokey really stand out.   sad.gif

Just found stonetrek animations, where Fred Flintstone meets Star Trek animations, through another forum. "To boulderly go where no caveman has gone before..." You could spend a whole day lost in space biggrin.gif

Congratulations!  You'[re gonna love the difference in all things, but uploading is particularly nice! wink.gif

Caroline found this site while looking for the Honda cogs advert. It's patchy, but some are really funny, some kinda shall we say "adult" (certainly PG). Some good stuff, much of it QT, some Real Player. Some, annoyingly, open as text files - you have to go back a page and download link to disc to play it - but hey with ADSL it need only take four minutes to download 11MB smile.gif . Two of our favourites are biker and dog. And check out Microsoft dance which opens in Quicktime. Isn't THAT ironic!

Hey, Hey Krissel!

Have fun! It makes a world of difference and knowing how much you like to surf.....it just makes it less frustrating, especially because it's on all the time and you can do other things and come back to it without that dialing up!

Thanks guys for the links...keep 'em coming.  biggrin.gif

I think the best part so far is the ability to download applications quickly.

For example, I downloaded the OS 9 version of iCab to try out but it came up during unstuffing as having a bad data fork so I downloaded it again. Same problem on second download so I went to a different server for the file on my third try. If I had still been on dialup I would have just said the heck with it or waited til I was going to do something around the house and let it dl while busy elsewhere. Now each time it took about a minute or so to dl the zip file.  tongue.gif

BTW, the third file was also "corrupted" which made me really suspicious that it wasn't the file that was the problem. Seems Stuffit Expander 6 was corrupting the file. I opened it with 5.5 and it was fine.  dry.gif

B) Gary.    smile.gif   Too bad it's advertising a Windoze product.

NOTE:

I encountered a problem with downloading my mail from my POP account at ATT. I elected to maintain a cheap version of my dialup account for the time being to keep access should I have trouble with the cable setup and to keep the files visible I uploaded to my online sites at ATT. However when connected through Eudora via cable I could not access the ATT server to download the mail. Got timeouts and no server connection messages.

Changed settings in TCP/IP to the dialup settings, had Eudora go out via the modem to get mail at ATT, no problem. But no matter what settings I tried in the personalities section of Eudora I could not get it to access the ATT mail server while connected via cable. Theoretically this should be possible as I see it trying to connect to a different IP address from my ATT dialup IPs, so I assume that is the mail server.

So I did the next best thing, I went to my ATT webmail account and had my email forwarded to my Optimum account and have Eudora download it through there. That works. Not sure if there is anything I didn't try but I guess this will do.
