NS 7.1 "SEND" problem

Anyone have a clue to 1) what's wrong and 2) where to fix it?

When attempting to SEND e-messages this afternoon, NS universally produced 1) the warning, shown below, while 2) nevertheless dispatching the item w/o my knowing so. In one instance when I, naturally  laugh.gif , kept clickin', the recipient, unbeknownst to me, received 5 copies of the same dispatch blush-anim-cl.gif

Same thing happened on two separate Pantherized Macs, in NS 7.1.

SBC is clueless.

The warning sez
QUOTE
Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server mail.pac.net failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connection. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator.

SBC/PacBell sez no server is "down" Probably correct, since the message went out in a flash via OS X MAIL. And, of course, so too on PacBell, the error message to the contrary notwithstanding.

I have "verified" settings until I'm blue in the face. They ARE correct, have been correct,  have been working smoothly for weeks - - both before and after recent Pantherizing.  Moverover, the message "claims" to fail on two separate Macs, but with the same NS version installed!! While the message stilll goes out OK

How can that be???

I know I had a heck of a time with Jaguar Mail after my ISP "improved" itself.  huh.gif

Ironically, Kelly, X-MAIL seems to ber working OK (Pantherized), but Netscape if squirrely beyond reason.

Is it still acting up?  I wonder if it's not this new "doom" worm, affecting the server and NS being "more sensetive" to a timeout than Mail.

The only time I've seen anything similar was when using Direcway and NS.  And Direcway's mail server was/is constantly going down.  Yes, I know SBC said it wasn't their server, but.......I seldom find anyone who acknowledges a mistake on his/her part first. (no, it's the software, no it's the hardware.....)

You beat me to it, Jen.

I reinstalled NS on one of the Panther boxes TO NO positive effects (i.e. SENT not working), only to find that within the last hour or so, "all better now". That tells me that SBC "tech service" didn't know or wasn't allowed to comment upon the havoc being wreaked by "Doom", or whatever, late yesterday and this morning.

Everything's zipping along now, however, as it did with in first glory days of Panther on iMac and Pismo.

So it's a "What did they know and when did they know it" circumstance, I guess.

I'm just glad it's over.

One VERY STRANGE NS 7.1 aspect to this experience, however. I initially decided that the best "therapy" for the unknown malady affecting my mail dispatch yesterday, was to construct a new profile. So, naturally I started looking for

1) a Netscape Folder in OSX Applications, within which, if memory serves correctly, I could find
2) a key to Profile Manager. Nope! NO FOLDER!.

Now what's that all about?

So, methinks, OK just reinstall the whole app. I did. Still . . . NO FOLDER and no clue to any Profile Manager. Not a shed of either, anywhere on the HD. I think I remember setting up a Profile when I first installed 7.1, back in OSX.0.x days, but it seems no longer present or relevant.

So, FWIW, everything's working, but WHERE'S PROFILE MANAGER?  IT'S STILL MENTNTIONED IN NS 7.1 HELP!!!! wacko.gif  Thinking.gif  wallbash.gif

Anybody . . . .?

Dick:  Good question.  I'm looking.  And the scary part is I know I did it not long ago, but the procedure is filed away with my other memories......whonder where that file is?

Don't use Netscape. smile.gif

But most things are in USER > Library, then it depends.

A Find with Netscape doesn't show anything? smile.gif

Read the "Read Me" on the Netscape installer and

FWIW, I signed up for a free 3-year 500 MB webhosting account last summer with an outfit called 1and1.com (as part of a promotion they were running at the time; the free deal is no longer available ;-( and moved all my little websites there from Mac.com (yes, the iDisk integrated-with-the-Finder interface is very convenient and easy to use, but saving $100/year plus getting five times the capacity seemed like a fair tradeoff for the lack of that ultra-convenience, and Fetch's interface is pretty easy to use for the u/l and d/l of files).  

After using them solely to host my sites for a number of weeks, I decided to try them as an email service, and it's been working out wonderfully!  I can create (and delete) email accounts whenever I want (I have about a dozen at the moment) including monthly 'disposable' addresses that I use whenever I need to supply an address on the web somewhere that I suspect might open me up to receiving SPAM; at the end o' that month, I delete that address.

The raisin I brought this up here is that one morning about a month ago I had repeated difficulty retrieving my mail; after I called their toll-free help line and sat on hold for less than ten minutes, a friendly person informed me that they were experiencing a problem w/ their servers, were working on a fix as we spoke, and it would be restored to normal with a couple o' hours.

Sure enough it was, and all has been well ever since!
