Overclocking
« on: March 15, 2003, 05:20:00 PM »
i am looking to squeeze out some more speed from my BW G3 400.
A new processor would only take me to 500 tops and would cost hundreds and looks tough and might be risky
This method

would cost about two dollars and seems simple. Would it be risky?
The speed thing is bothering me because my firewire burner seems slower in Jag. Everything else looks accelerated but im pretty sure im no longer getting 16X speed on my FW burner. I can choose faster speeds, but the only one that acutally moves at its advetised rate is 12x. Under OS9, this was true of 16x.

If your ZIF processor is the original 400 MHz one (at this time not already overclocked), you can try to squeeze an extra 50 MHz out of it.  Some people are successful at getting a 100 MHz, but that is very rare.  In my three Macs, one B&W and two beiges, I have successfully overclocked them 50 MHz with no issues what so ever.

If you think about upgrading yor processor, it really is simple, easy and straight forward.  You can find full instructions to do the upgrade on Other World Computing's web site.

Search here for peoples testimonies to their CPU upgrades and overclockings.

Here are my figures.

Beige G3 rev 1 w/ OWC 366 MHz  G3 ZIF, overclocked to 400 MHz.

Beige G3 rev. 2 w/ Apple 350 MHz G3 ZIF, overclocked to 400 MHz.

B&W rev. 1 w/ OWC 550 MHz G4 ZIF, overclocked to 600 MHz.

Any higher and I get instability problems.  B&W also has a CPU fan installed for extra protection of overheating.

Right now the top processor for a BW G3 promises 533 or 550 (?) as opposed to the 400 i have now.
The personal testimonies are about divided between horror stories and yippees with even most of the latter saying the difference is not that great.
For a $300 DYI that doesnt come with instructions, i dont like those odds.
Now if an 800 MHz model came along ...

Personally, if your gonna run Jag, the difference is very substancial.  You would not be paying for MHz alone, with the 550 MHz ZIF you are also paying for a G4 processor.

Wow, I just went to OWC and found this for $330.

I am quite surprised and now understand your whoas.  It has gone up substancially since I purchased mine.  Was $280, but with my email flyer discount it was only $255 at the time.

I guess you could boost yours to 450MHz for just a few dollars, you will need 6 jumpers to do it.  Radio Shack part number #276-1512a.  Comes in a dozen pack.

I agree about the 800 MHz or better upgrade.  I wonder why it wouldn't work or why none is offered.  At a 9x multiplier, on paper, with a 100 MHz bus, that would figure out to a 900 MHz top off.  That would be nice.
