New Flat Panel iMacs announced !!

Apple has updated the FP iMac line.     The price on the eMac has also been lowered.

Some were hoping for a 19" G4 iMac.

I am curious, what are the pros and cons of the imac?

I am very seriously looking at purchasing one.I love the design of it, so steamlined,compact and even futuristic. My concerns are with the all-in-one type design. What about expansions (ram etc.) over time? Is it possible?

Track records on repair? Are most pretty trouble free in regards to hardware issues/failures? I would prefer real folks take on this vs. studies and figures and data collected by surveys.

I love my ibook, and want to replace a windoze desktop in my home, that has me down to one windoze machine left to eliminate.

Ahh, but then there is the power mac!

Marie.  

Pros: They're beautiful.

They take up less space than a tower and monitor.

You can add RAM and replace the hard drive with a bigger one.

Or add a Firewire Hard Drive.

I haven't heard of any major problems with them.

Cons: You can't upgrade the Video Card.

At this point you can't upgrade the Processor.

In the future, who knows, they upgrade original imacs now.

The newest imacs probably don't Boot OS 9 just use Classic.

This may or may not be important to you.

You can get a more upgradeable tower and a decent monitor for similar price.

Tough choices.

Hmm, i do think it's a little to soon to wait for a 19" tft for the iMac.
We "just" had the 17" (in terms of technology ages) and a 17" still is kinda standard on house computers? not?

My personal opinion is as follows, but take this into consideration:

I am usng a G4/500 purchased in '00.
Next to me is an iMac/333 purchased in '98

Around my room are 6 (six) PC's.

I love my Macs, but PC's have their uses too.

Now:

If you have a PC right now, I assume it's a tower+monitor, and not an ePC or whatever iMac knockoffs came out in 99-00. If you buy a G4 tower (cheapest @ $1500) and use your PC's monitor (hey, I know Apple displays are beautiful, but money's money.) you will be spending the bext extra $300 on a computer for a long time (I am assuming you're looking to but the lowest config iMac, alter accordingly.)  The tower, as I have come to find out, offers MUCH MORE in expandability than the iMac. Even is you /dont/ look forward to adding your own SCSI controllers or maxing out your tower at 2 gigs of sdram, it still pays to have the option to be able to install another harddrive (to fix a friend's, etc) and change the CD-ROM or add a ZIP drive, etc. etc. etc. withough having cables hanging off every part of your table. That, and internal peripherals. cost less than external.

just my opinion.

plus, towers look more proffessional, especially if you're using it with a beige monitor. 1337.

Actually,
I have one desktop, an ibook, and a toshiba laptop running windoze XP.

I have been throwing the idea around of "trading" my toshiba (year old) for another mac, or just flat out selling it. I had gotten into a laptop frame of mind for a bit.

I've got to say those new prices and upgrades on the iMacs/PBs and PMs are real tempting.

Should I keep my iMac FP 700 machine or sell it befor it becomes a part of history,
iMac 700-40 gig hd-256 mb ram-dvd/cdrw combo drive-Jaguar, keynote and all the extras along with another external 40 gig hd usb connection.
