Installing 8.6 on my older 6500
« on: March 26, 2003, 08:58:00 AM »
My 6500/250 is running system 8.0 and I'd like to move up to 8.6 I don't have my original install disk for system 8.5, I have a copy of the 8.5 CD that I burned for myself before I lost the original (wasn't THAT thinking ahead!). However, when I load the CD into the 6500 I receive the announcement "This disk is unreadable by this Macintosh, do you want to initialize the disk?" But of course I can't because it is locked! Back to my G4, copied the CD onto my hard drive, and burned another CD to see if that might do the trick and the same thing happened. My G4 recognizes it, but the 6500 doesn't. I don't want to buy another copy of the 8.5 system disk. I also have system 9 install disks, but they are for this G4 and our eMac, and they won't work either. Any suggestions? Or should I just be content with 8.0? I don't think I can upgrade to 8.6 from 8.0, right? Thanks! --Joan

Hi Joan.

Right. OS 8.5 is a Full System Upgrade from OS 8.0

You can't just use Updates to get there.

Is the burned backup copy a CDRW by any chance?

The 6500 CD-ROM won't read that.

You might try a different brand of CDR Disk.

I think 8.5/8.6 would be a good OS for that machine.

I did try a different brand CD to no avail, and no, it's not a CDRW. So hmmmm......

Ok. Does the 6500 have trouble reading other CDs?

Are all the CD related Extensions loaded?

Does it need cleaning?

Is this a machine specific Install CD?

How did you make the copy?

You might try to copy the contents of the CD to the 6500

from your G4 over an Ethernet Connection if you have one.
