Speaking of silver linings...

After carelessly clicking the wrong button in TechTool Pro, I had erased everything on my hard drive. Everything! Gone. Since I had just backed up my files, and had a recent backup of my System Folder, it didn't take long to restore many of the "essentials".

The silver lining? Since I can't possibly remember everything I had installed, or where it all was, I have a much leaner machine. I'll just add things as I need them. The stuff that never gets used will not be reinstalled. If I miss it, I'll find it and restore it.

Now, I must go looking for my bookmarks. My address book and old e-mails were restored, so there's hope.

P.S. TTP really should put "Wipe Disk" in an "Advanced" or "Expert" window instead of right near where "Wipe Free Space" is located. I learned my lesson: pay attention!

My WallStreet died last night. Will receive a new 14-inch iBook tomorrow morning by FedEx overnight.

I do volunteer income tax work under the AARP TaxAide program, so I back up frequently (like once or twice a week). This time I MAY have lost two days' work. Won't know until my new computer arrives.

I took the hard drive out of my WallStreet and put it in an external USB enclosure, hoping the drive is recoverable. Will know tomorrow.

My point is, henceforth I will backup daily.

iMac G3, 233 mhz, 160mg Ram, OS 9.1

Speaking of backing up, after many frustrating weeks of trying to replace an unreadable Imation SuperDisk (trust me, it's toast) my new one has finally arrived and will be picked up tomorrow. Do I use the old CD to install the driver, then do an update, or is that Iomega I see on the HD compatible with Imation? I think I read somewhere that installation is not necessary with OS9 as it is supported.

Second question: My software updater shows CD burner as a possible installation. Can my now ancient iMac use this? If so, how? I wouldn't be downloading music.

It's quite wierd that my Netscape prefs from the backup restored all my recent e-mail messages and my current address book, but did not restore the latest list of bookmarks. I had no bookmarks at all at first. Since Netscape prefs is one of the things I back up when I back up files, I thought I'd be able to find the latest set of bookmarks. Nope. The copy I had just backed up, and the one on my System Folder backup were several months old, near as I can recall. I still had no old bookmarks until I changed the name of the Bookmarks file to Bookmark.html after discarding the file of that name.

As posted earlier on this thread, my trusty old WallStreet died last Sunday evening.

I phoned in an order to MacMall on Monday morning for a new 14-inch iBook 800 Combo, which was FedEx-ed overnight and I had it by noon on Tuesday.

I have nearly everything restored from my Retrospect backups, and all that remains is to download printer drivers for my HP Photosmart color inkjet, plus I have yet to receive an adapter so I can run my HP LaserJet 4M from the ethernet port.

It's going to take a while to get used to OS X. Since I'm so well acquainted with 9.2.2 I will continue to work there at least until tax season is over.

I think I'm going to like it!

Arrggghhhh!!!!! I just discovered that my G3 is no longer HFS+ (see top) Why did it do that? Now the only way to get it back is to wipe it off again!

I think my strategy will be to dump a clone onto an iBook with a much bigger hard drive and plenty of room to spare. Then I can use my OS9 disk to run drive setup and reinstall. Some things won't copy back from the clone (like TTP, the original culprit) but most stuff will, I hope.

Hey Gregg, I built a partition with slim pickins from my overloaded main partition and surprisingly I find that I am able operate without all the accumulated clutter. If I need something it’s right next door. I’ve also done the HFS drop shuffle myself once or twice, so I put it all on CD’s.

Well JW, through TAX time I’ve used “Retrospect Easyscripts” to backup daily and it’s amazing how fast it works when there’s little data. You just set it for a time when you know your not using the computer and it works great!
If you have Retrospect, look under Automate, it’s a time saver!

Is there another strategy I'm missing? I won't have the iBook for more than a month.
