Another hard drive problem.
« on: April 09, 2003, 12:09:00 PM »
Dakota, this must be the month for failing hard drives.

I have a beige G3 with two internal drives and one external. One of the internals is ATA and one is SCSI. The external is SCSI and is the problem. The two internals work fine. The external was working until I tried to move some system files from it to the ATA. Now it won't mount. The only thing that will see it is SCSI Probe and SCSI HD Setup. I ran a test on it with HD Setup and it tests fine. Disk Warrior and TechTool don't even see it. When I boot the system it locks up about half way through, cursor won't move, I turn off the drive and that frees the cursor although the boot does not continue. Booting with the drive turned off works fine. I've zapped the PRAM, rebuilt the desktop and deactivated all extensions and control panels,  Yes All , to no avail. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of swapping the drive unit with the internal one to see what happens.

Steve -

I dunno if SCSI HD Setup differs substantially from Drive Setup, but in the latter, in the Functions menu, there is an option called Update Driver.

AFAIK, this will do just what its name implies, and not disturb any other data on the HD.

Another suggestion is to run a current version of Norton Disk Doctor.  I have personally experienced several disk maladies that NDD fixed easily that the other well-known disk utils couldn't.

kbear, HD Setup actually predates Drive Setup but I have found it useful in cases where Drive Setup would not work. Part of the problem is that you can't test/fix/update/etc. what you can't see.

The latest on this situation. Since the external drive had been working and what testing I was able to do said the drive was OK. so last night I swapped the two SCSI drives and did nothing else. Guess what, everything is now working fine. Go figure. I still think SCSI should be spelled voodoo. I have no idea what was going on.
