Need Old LCII Board Diagram
« on: April 23, 2003, 05:31:00 PM »
This is a favor for a elder neighbor of my son who is still running on an old "pre-power mac" LCII.  I donated my old Performa Plus 13" Display to him over an Easter visit and he went from B/W to 16 colors and thought he found heaven in his old mac.

I want to donate more from my cache of old parts - - - but need to know what I'm looking at to explore any additional ways I give it any additional boost - (I have an old Sonnet 040 which might help to get him up to minimum email requirements in addition to 7.6 OS and more).

This puter is near and dear to him - forget about any thoughts of him throwing it away.

Apple Support just list the tech spec's in list form - I'm looking for a motherboard layout and the like -  so I can see how I can do this salvation 'long distance' until my next trip down to New Jersey.

Just look for some links from here.

http://new.lowendmac.com/lc/lcii.shtml

Why not just get him a better machine?

He doesn't have to throw the old one away.

They're throwing 5200s and 6200s away everyday.

Only place I know for logic board diagrams off the top of my head is  Mac Gurus . Unfortunately no LCII.

I know how attached we can get to old machines. I've still got a BBC Model B(Acorn) and 48k ZX Spectrum(Timex in the States?) tucked away somewhere.

My daughter has an LCII. I don't think you should go higher than 7.5.5. We installed 7.6 and it slowed down considerably.   You also might want to swap out the logic board with a Quadra 605 so you can add more memory. You will need another VRAM chip if you do this. This was a nice $20 upgrade!

I've got one that started out as an LC II, then upgraded it to an LC III, and then again to a LC 475!

I bought the logicboard from Junkyard Jeff's used Mac Parts, http://www.users.qwest.net/~jgarbacz/

I think I paid $10.00 for it  (including shipping!). He has lots of really old Mac stuff.

I really liked those old "pizza boxes".

You might see if the thing "sings" before you put too much effort into it.  We had dozens of those things where the capacitors started leaking in the audio stages going into the speaker and the thing would sit there and "sing" to you.  My favorite fix was to put a better motherboard into it; I think someone already mentioned the LC 475!  I didn't check the links for service manuals so let me know if you don't learn enough to get you into/out of trouble.  I know I have some old service manuals here!

Hey neokm!

If you want, I'll give you my LC II board for the cost of postage.

Aww what-the-heck, I'll give you the LC III too! (I gots to do some spring cleaning anyways!)

Both worked perfectly. They're bare-bones (no battery, memory etc).

You just gotta promise to make a best effort to use 'em.

Let me know!

Thank you all - - -

This is for an 80+ elder who is undergoing enough changes in his life having just lost his wife.  As I looked around his house when last there, it was obvious that he charishes fixtures, furnishings and appartatus - with little desire to replace or throw things out.  (Kind of like myself.)

Can't thank you all enough.  I'll try harder now - with all your ideas.

Mike
