Software Update Won’t, OS 9.2.2
« on: April 10, 2003, 07:35:00 AM »
For years I have successfully used the Software Update control Panel on my PB G3-333 Lombard, OS 9.2.2, 384 MB RAM. I do not have the “Update Automatically” function enabled. No peripherals are connected.

Even though Apple is no longer updating OS 9.X, I attempted to run the Software Update v1.2 yesterday. About 7 seconds after initiation, the status/barber pole stopped cold, the screen froze, and I was forced to do a three-finger restart. No alert/dialog boxes were presented. FWIW, other live updates work as designed, so I am not inclined to think it is a connection problem.

At first I thought (hoped) it was a corrupt preference, so I trashed the Software Update preference and the Software Update Log preference. Restarted, another attempt, same result.

I also verified that the following were all enabled as I read somewhere that may play a role.
Security Cert Module
Security Library
Security Manager
Security Policy Module
Security Storage Module

I then ran TTPro v3.0.9 and Disk Warrior v2.1.1, both indicted no problems. So I then disabled, virus checking thinking that may have an affect. Restarted, another attempt, same result.

I then reattempted via a direct connect to Apple. Same result.

Since I mainly use this machine for surfing and all other applications work perfectly, I am not keen on reinstalling the OS. It is not that I even need this Updating function, but it does bother me that I can’t get it to work.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks,
Harv

Harv,

FWIW, I just tried to connect to the Apple Software Update site and it pulled down a list of things for me that I could update and began to do so.

Worked fine as far as I could tell. Not sure what might have happened in your case, but do you have a copy of TomeViewer?

Might help to try and install just the Software Update from your copy of the OS.

Just a thought.

Take care, Harv.

Thanks Chris, I may well do as you suggested if nothing else develops. I do not (yet) have TomeViewer, but that is easily resolved.

I wonder if somehow the BernMeister got to my machine...    Or, if there is just some setting or other control panel/extension that requires enabling.

Harv. Not much to update in 9.x any more.

About all I could find was try mac OS All.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75103

Pismo has that big problem with the Password Security Control Panel.

"Do not under any circumstances use the Password Security control panel with the "Pismo" PowerBook or with any PowerBook running Mac OS 9 (see Apple TIL #58612) -- it will render your PowerBook inoperable. The only fix is to put the drive in an older PowerBook, open Password Security, go to Setup, and click the Reset button, then put the drive back in your Pismo."

Kelly, Thanks for the links and tips, but alas, I have made no progress. I may begin disabling recently installed apps, (control panels and extensions) to see what then develops. I have not installed much, so the task should not be too difficult -- at least in theory.

To conclude the saga-

I have not a clue what caused this problem in the first place, or how it got fixed, but it did. It seems incongruous to me that QuickTime should have an affect, but…

Today I installed the new QuickTime 6.0.3. I then ran TTPro (no problems) and then, almost for kicks, I again attempted to use the Software Update control panel. And now it works. Corruption in the old QT? I dunno.
