Need help with a UMAX SuperMac
« on: May 01, 2003, 05:34:00 PM »
A young man, disadvantaged in serveral ways, asked me to help him with his new "Macintosh" computer. He bought it for $20 at a Goodwill store, knowing next to nothing about computers. He wanted a word processor installed. I agreed to take a look and see if the computer had any potential.

IT DOES! It is a UMAX SuperMac (Model c500) with a 603e/180 processor and a 1 gig hard drive, with OS 7.6 installed. Its major limitation is that it has only 16 megabytes of RAM. I believe that with more RAM, this will be a very serviceable machine.

What I plan to do is add memory, wipe the hard drive and install some flavor of OS 8 (I have several versions), then load it up with Microsoft Word and several other programs he might find useful.

My problem is that I don't know for sure what memory modules it takes. When I pop the top, I see two empty slots along one side of the motherboard. They appear to be 168-pin DIMM slots. Apparently the original 16 megabytes are built-in. The word "Typhoon" appears next to the UMAX logo on the motherboard.

Can someone help me identify just what memory to install, or better yet, furnish a DIMM or two that would work? I thought I was out of the Mac service business, and gave away all the memory I had on hand. I'd really like to help this guy. Can any of you help?

We'd both be grateful.

It takes the same chips that go in the 6400 and 6500.

Macspeedzone C500/180  says # RAM Slots: 2, 168-pin DIMM # Min RAM Speed: 70 ns

If you have a Umax C500 or C600, you should use the version of Drive Setup that ships with the System 8.0 or 8.1 disk, or the one that comes as part of the Mac OS 8.5.1 update. This is part of the normal system installation or update.

* When upgrading RAM, avoid 4K refresh memory, choosing 2K memory instead. EDO memory is preferable to FPM memory, since the 16 MB on the motherboard is already EDO RAM.
OWC  has 64K EDO for $47.99 (Dang, wasn't long ago I paid $100± for the same thing!)  Using Ramseeker it appears that MacSolutions is offering 64 meg for $19.99

Bet  Tom Koon's 6400 Zone  will be a big help.

Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

Jennie. No need for the expensive RAM.

OWC has OWC 64 MB EDO RAM for $20.

C 500 Memory

Just about any newer IDE Hard Drive would help.

You might find a 10 Gig Maxtor or something pretty cheap.

Would cut Boot time in half or better and speed everything up.

Someday he might consider a CPU Upgrade.

Thank you Kelly;  I thought Techworks was the expensive brand, but I didn't see the "house brand" at OWC.

chuckwagen-knowing it takes the same as the 6400 and 6500 confirms my suspicion that Tom's 6400 Zone will be a great help for jw.
