A young man, disadvantaged in serveral ways, asked me to help him with his new "Macintosh" computer. He bought it for $20 at a Goodwill store, knowing next to nothing about computers. He wanted a word processor installed. I agreed to take a look and see if the computer had any potential.
IT DOES! It is a UMAX SuperMac (Model c500) with a 603e/180 processor and a 1 gig hard drive, with OS 7.6 installed. Its major limitation is that it has only 16 megabytes of RAM. I believe that with more RAM, this will be a very serviceable machine.
What I plan to do is add memory, wipe the hard drive and install some flavor of OS 8 (I have several versions), then load it up with Microsoft Word and several other programs he might find useful.
My problem is that I don't know for sure what memory modules it takes. When I pop the top, I see two empty slots along one side of the motherboard. They appear to be 168-pin DIMM slots. Apparently the original 16 megabytes are built-in. The word "Typhoon" appears next to the UMAX logo on the motherboard.
Can someone help me identify just what memory to install, or better yet, furnish a DIMM or two that would work? I thought I was out of the Mac service business, and gave away all the memory I had on hand. I'd really like to help this guy. Can any of you help?
