Whacky CD Drive.
« on: February 07, 2003, 06:24:00 AM »
Does anybody know why a CD Drive will mount Cd's. Then turn around and not mount a Cd? That's the way of it with my Performa 6360. Not much more that I can tell you. Sometimes they mount, sometimes they won't. My drive cleaner CD mounts everytime. But others won't. Thanks, Buck

I've had certain CDs that won't mount, in whatever computer I tried them in. If it's consistently the same CD that won't mount, try it in another computer. It might just be a bad CD and not the drive at all.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Is that the stock CD?

Are some of them that won't mount burned CDs or CDRWs?

Do you have all the CD related Extensions loaded?

Some disk that won't mount: Norton, Mac System 8.5.1 installer CD. Seems that CD's that won't mount are CD's that do not have system folders on them.

The CD drive is clean and the CD's in question are in B+ condition. But like I said, the only CD's that seem to work are the one's with system folders on the CD.

for a really thorough cleaning tutorial.

Interesting that you're having this problem Buck - I rescued several 6360's from the Andover recycling day back in September and one of them had the same problem. I donated them to the schools in North Andover and our head tech said that this was not an uncommon problem with this model. More than that I don't know - I haven't been able to find any helpful references online. I also don't know if a new CD-ROM drive would solve the problem or not - I ran out of spare drives to try.
