"Old video" to DVD method?

My wife brought home a Hi8 video after telling everyone that I could make a DVD out of it. coolio.gif We searched around and found our "old" Sony HandyCam just to see if we could get the battery to charge. Found a video/audio cable that I think we can attach to our DVD player/recorder for a possible analog to digital conversion. That might even be the simplest method of making any DVD's, especially after my frustrating endeavors with iDVD...

Any other suggestions ( without spending money ), methods ( without spending money ), resources ( without spending money ). In other words, "I'm cheap!" blush-anim-cl.gif

My iGloo does have DVD burning capabilities that I have used to make a data disk...

I do this with two video cameras at this time.

I have my old Hi8 camera, I output it to my MiniDV camera via RCA lines and from that MiniDV camera I use a firewire cable to get the signal to my Mac and iMovies.

I do the same thing AL does.  It is really pretty easy, just time consuming.  Also remember, you need about 13GB for an hour of DV footage.  You will need about 1.5 times that to edit it and encode a DVD in iDVD.  So.... for every hour of footage you better have about 32 GB of free space on your hard drive.

Actually, I can't [<-- edited] even view the tape with the camera. I'm sure the little lithium battery is dead. Just buying a new one could cost more than it's worth to preview the thing. I may just drop it off at a video/audio shop and get them to put it on a DVD. Then I can copy/edit/whatever Judy wants me to do with it. The mear creation of a DVD version of the tape is probably all she wants, anyway.

...Copy yes edit.... not really.  You can edit a DVD, but first you would have to rip the .VOB files = time consuming and difficult.  Also remember the Video will be compressed as Mpeg2 files so editing and then recompressing is not a good idea.

If you plan to do any editing, you really need to do that before you Burn the first DVD.
