Partition Icons
« on: June 06, 2006, 12:49:57 PM »
I have 2 HD's and both are split into 2 nice partitions - thus I have 4 drive icons on my desktop. Yesterday I needed a change, so I CONTROL-CLICKed, got info on the partition. Did same to selected icon. Then I clicked on the icon in the info box, COPIED, and clicked on icon on HD info box, PASTED - and bingo, new icon.

Worked well on 3 of 4 partitions. However, my classic partition (don't know why I still have it, but I do and I don't know how to dump it without reformatting) .. anyhoo, my classic partition won't allow me to paste a new icon. Looking down the info box, I notice that under OWNERSHIP AND PERMISSIONS everything is grayed out.  huh.gif  I don't know why. I'm in admin mode (it's the only way I've ever run this computer - and yes, I probably should change that - but I'm clueless how to get certain things to work if I do - and that's another issue).

Back to my icon/classic partition: How come I don't have permission to change this? I must have had way back before storage, as I changed the icon on a regular basis back then. How do I change the permissions so that I can change this icon?

I'm tired of looking at the piece of toast with jam.

Click the Details arrow. Is the lock 'locked'?

Is "Classic" perhaps Active/running? dntknw.gif

Maybe it doesn't 'like' OS X icons? Thinking.gif

Classic wasn't running. So I tried turning it on to see if that would work. It didn't.

Finally, I did a restart (I've been running 24/7 since I've had my *mac* bac as part of the OSX folding team) and I was able to change the icon.

Go figure.

Hey, kimmie, isn't that the PC way?

When in doubt, restart.

if you can boot from OS 9, you might as well hang on to it because it's handy for fixing problems with X.

For example, there are no invisible X files in 9. And if a file refuses to be deleted, it can be killed when running 9.

I don't use Spotlight, so I boot into 9 to rename Spotlight's Search.bundle in Tiger's Core Services folder, so the Spotlight menu item doesn't appear. (But Spotlight should be running when downloading and installing updates, so I change the name back before running Software Update.)

Ironically, System 9 makes a terrific System X utility.

For the most part you can delete files in X while in 9, except for 'the file from hell' that I could not dump from anywhere, even booted in 9. I forget the message I would get when trying to empty the Trash but it always left that one file. I downloaded every app on the net that claimed to eliminate files but none worked. The file was corrupted in some way.

kps so kindly spent several days giving me commands to try to change the permissions of that file from the X side yet it was 'not recognized' by the system, either one. There it was in the Trash, laughing at me.

Finally got rid of it a few months later when I reformatted my entire drive.   tongue.gif
