??Apple to buy Nintendo??
« on: June 09, 2006, 07:33:20 PM »

Online conspiracy theorists suggest that Apple is about to frag the gaming community with a revelation that could shake Microsoft to its core: Apple will buy Nintendo. What could be more quintessentially left-field Apple behaviour than buying out the US's number three games console manufacturer?

No game at Apple eh? That seems funny considering this is the featured article at the Apple Developer connection: Developing Games on Mac OS X Using Third-Patry Game Engines.

That seems like they are promoting games smile.gif

Of course, I still highly doubt any buyout of Nintendo in the near future.

As usual John Martellaro'd articles are worth reading. smile.gif

It was not written as a response to the Nintendo "fantasy".

Just what he thinks after working for Apple for years.

Yes they do Games some.

They're just never going to be what Hardcore Gamers want them to be.

Whether Apple would even need to buy or merge with Nintendo is more the question.

More likely Apple would create a partnership with a company like Nintendo or steal their programmers to insure games that could function on an incarnation of the iPod. Rememer there will come a time that the iPod will start to lose it's grip on the majority of music mp3 players and video is still not settled as to download legality issues.

Some have mentioned the use of the mini as a gaming console. Perhaps if the graphics cards were optionally upgraded it would make sense. But my main question would be how this would jive with the ability of the Mac to now run Windows. Why bother if all you need is a copy of XP or better to run all the PC games? I could see this happening before the switch to Intel but why now?

But who knows? Steve has surprised us in the past. Maybe he has a home play center in mind and games are part of it.

There may not be a need to buy Nintendo but where do they go from here? They're into Pixar for video, and contracts with record companies for audio, but they will not, in my lifetime, replace Windows in an Office environment, but Linux might. They're losing education, and printing, they do not have a lock in science, security or the military. They need to expand into the retail market with something they can lockup like m4a's, so making a better game would suit their target market, IMO.  coolio.gif
