DVD-RW Software
« on: June 06, 2006, 11:00:17 AM »
iMac G5 1.8GHz 1st generation OS 10.3.9

In reference to my previous post regarding my inability to burn a DVD-RW disc, I had sent the G5 to an Apple Service center.
My G5 is back from Apple servicing. It took 2 weeks. They replaced the Matshita DVD-R UJ-825 burner and performed the Adam recall by replacing the Logic board and the Power Supply. I can now burn a DVD-RW disc. However cannot make multiple DVD-RW burn sessions. I can burn multiple CD-RW sessions, something I could do before the repair.

Which software is best to burn multiple sessions? Can one use the Disc Utility to make multiple recording sessions? If so, how?

Which software is best to burn multiple sessions?
Toast. May not be the best one, but it's the well known one.

Choose "Write Session" in the advanced tab, during burning. Then you should be able to add material to the CD/DVD.

Not I've known of. (I could be wrong.)

Hope this helps.

Are you guys sure Toast can burn multi-session DVDs? I looked at the features and never saw it mention anywhere. It is possible to burn a multi-session CD though but DVD? I didn't see it. The only thing I saw was an oldish Roxio Knowledge Base article on Toast 6 saying "there is no supported multi-session standard for DVD recording."

That's all I could find on this through Google...  dntknw.gif

Kelly. I have Toast Titanium 7.0.

MHC is right. I just tried to burn a second session with Toast. The window tells me that the disc is unwritable. As Antony had suggested, I had selected "Write Session" in the advanced tab before burning the first session. Now the selections "Write Session", "Write Disc" is grayed out and the selection "Write Disc" is selected even though I had set it to "Write Selection".

The very same thing happened with BurnX Free. But there I was adviised by the Software author that BurnX Free does not handle multiple sessions of DVD-RW discs, only CD-RW, which I can confirm.

So back to the search of an OS 10.3.9 compatible Multiple Sessions DVD-RW software.

Further confirming what MacHeadCase wrote, Here is what I found on the Roxio website when I asked about Toast 7 multiple session DVD-RW:

You cannot burn a multi-session DVD using Toast Titanium 5 or Toast Titanium 6. Currently, there is no supported multi-session standard for DVD recording.

I wonder if Dragon Burn would support this though?...

I got this from that webpage I link you to:

QUOTE
Supports even the most complex data formats: ISO 9660, Joliet, UDF 1.5, UDF 1.02, HFS, HFS+, Hybrid, and Multi-Session (DVD+RW only).

Yep I think it does...

QUOTE
Add data incrementally to CDs and DVDs (Multisession Support) for HFS(+), ISO and UDF file systems.
Multi-Session Spport.

Dragon Burn 4.1 More Info.

Same thing with Dragon, MHC.

DVD-RW "Burn Session" grayed out, only option is to "Burn Disc".
CD-RW OK. Both "Burn Session" and "Burn Disc" selections active. Burnt a 3rd session without problem. Did notice that Dragon was much faster than Toast and BurnX Free.

Hmmm. It seems it's a limitation in the technology then otherwise they would all be able to make multi-session burns on DVDs.

But they do say they can make multi-session burns on DVD+RW?... What is the difference?  huh.gif

Talking with Apple, they told me I could NOT make multisessions DVD-RW with OS 10.3.9, but that I could with OS 10.4.6 Disk Utility.
Has anybody tried to burn multisessions DVD-RW with OS 10.4.6?

Kelly.

Though I have an External HD for backup, and that I use Super Duper for weekly backup update, I thought I might use a DVD-RW for archiving those files that are not subject to change, and to be able to add other files on the same disc. I would hate to burn another disc, CD-R or DVD-R, for an additional small file (1-2 MB or even less), or several other files for that matter. Archiving on a separate media would allow me to liberate space on the Hard discs.

I will soon install 10.4.6 on a separate partition and check if Apple is right that I can indeed burn multiple sessions on a DVD-RW. Funny, I suspect I won't be able to.

Well, I installed OS 10.4.6. And sure enough, you CANNOT burn multi sessions on a DVD-RW with Disc Utility, even though the Menu Help says you can. I get the same greyed out "Leave Disc Appendable" as with OS 10.3.9.

I wish somebody at Apple would come in and indeed confirm that you CANNOT burn multi sessions DVD-RW's, or if one CAN, TELL US HOW!!!

In the mean time I will follow Kelly's advice and be content to burn multi sessions DVD-R's.

Hi Kelly,

In response to your question about my equipment: I'm not sure I was able to locate all the particulars.

Hardware Overview: Machine speed-400MHz -- Bus speed-67MHz -- #of processors-1 -- L2 cache size-1MB -- Machine model-PowerBook G3 Series(version=82.2) -- Boot Rom info-1.of1

Memory overview: J3/Bottom-256 MB -- J1/Top-128 MB

Software overview: System version-Mac OS X 10.2.8(6R73)

About DVD: Apple System Profiler = Devices & Volumes = DVD

There is a bay on each side of the PB. On the left is the battery, the right is where you put a CD.

Although I'm sure that is more than you asked for, that is what I found and you probably make more sense out of it than I do. Some of it clicks with me, the rest may as well be Greek.

Did I see a page somewhere that gives instructions on how to use everything available here, such as inserting a quote, and all the goodies I see in your posts?
