OT: Wursburg whilwind

(Another Bloody Church) Ok, that's England, not Germany.

Anyway...
Dick, my son made it back to Wursburg today, and as you suggested, he toured a castle there (the castle?) He was impressed, especially by the unguided half of the tour. A co-worker (his supervisor, no less) took him and another American intern. He wanted to get to Wursburg anyway, and that saved the visitors the train fare.

My son is going to try to contact the family he stayed with for a week in Munich five years ago. They subsequently sent their son here with his school group, and he stayed with us for two weeks. He hopes to get down there on his upcoming 4 day weekend, characteristically waiting until the eleventh hour to make plans. They sure have frequent holidays in Germany. This is the third one since he arrived in late May.

He's passing on a group outing to Prague because he wants to drink in the culture, and is convinced the others will be more interested in other beverages. That's my boy! smile.gif

He'll be taking a one-on-one German class starting next week. His German language skills are so far advanced that he's literally in a class by himself. There's a U.S. Army base in the town he's staying in, and the language school caters to their needs, apparently.

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

And I hear it's inexpensive.

By "castle" in Wurzburg, did your son mean the Marienberg – on top of the "mountain" (the first pic in the link, below), rather than the Residenz (the Bishop's Palace)? The latter is one of the most dazzling structures I've ever visited.

Here are some informative pics I stumbled across just yesterday, posted by someone from Sheboygan, ferhevensakes
Wurzburg photos and MORE

Remarkable collection. Quite a range of cities there . . . almost a planning guide for your son's free time!  thumbup.gif

If he only has time to visit a few cities, suggest that he try to make it to Heidelberg, Munchen, and Berlin (among the "majors") and the smaller towns of Rothenberg (on the Tauber) and the Bingen/Rudesheim area in the MittleRhein region.

Schweinfurt, since it's on the Main, means he could see its nearby valley passages through a variety of modest "mountinain" ranges, with many small towns and villlages that I'm sure he's been enjoying close to "home".

If he gets a second chance tell him (as best you can an 18? year-old!) to try Prague. He'll not regret it. It will, at the very least, "invigorate"  his interest in European history.

Do I ever envy him his summer!   notworthy.gif

Don't know which castle. He has put some more photos up online, but we have not had a chance to look at them. Don't even know if that includes Wursburg...

Rothenburg is on the itinerary this weekend. Munich will come later. He has a friend there who he stayed with in Jr. High, then Hendrick came to visit us.

Just celebrated his 20th after arrival in Germany. Yes, I've encouraged him to travel. His plan is to spend all the money he makes except for what he owes to Mom and Dad for the airline tickets. So, that will limit him somewhat.

I'll keep you posted. (perhaps by PMs if others aren't really interested)
