Can Novell SUSE Linux Take On Microsoft Windows Vista?

There's a Vista Beta 2 CD waiting for me to pick up, I'm going to compare it to Ubuntu. This analysis has given me some guidelines on what to compare and what to expect.

Has anyone seen OpenSuse on XGL? If not, you must see it. It matches OSX in the eye candy department.

If I'm not mistaken I would need to repartition to run suse where I can run Ubuntu off a boot CD.

umm, sb,

you better have some serious hardware to run SuSE.

SuSE has lots of eye candy (agree with masterchief there....), but it's just too much.

That's why I switched initially.

Now I won't use anything but Ubuntu, ESPECIALLY since the upgrade to Dapper.

Haven't really looked anywhere else, but I can tell you first hand that SuSE is a dog.

I compare it to Ubuntu as far as speed goes and it's absolutely night and day.

Just my $.02.

And the LiveCD bit is very nice......just saved me working on another system that was running SuSE 9.3 that I fixed using Dapper's LiveCD.

I think there is a choice in how much "eye-candy" you install with SUSE.  I'm hoping we can sell SUSE on Desktop to the powers-that-be in our school district because I really don't want to function as a crash-dummy site for Microsoft here at work anymore and we're a big Novell user.

Of course you can choose; that's the beauty of Linux.

I was speaking of the absolute hardware hog SuSE is.

It ran absolutely choked on this laptop and has proven slower on other desktops for me as well.

I was just saying that you better have the hardware to run it in a reasonable way, because it IS a hog.

I personally won't do that just to run a distro.

That's what happens when you get too much bloat.

That's what I like about Ubuntu - the base install is slim for the most part and you get a lean system that runs well.
 
I just find Ubuntu runs much nicer even new versions on older hardware.

Have a PIII in the lab at school that has an install of Breezy and it runs great. Tried SuSE 10 and couldn't even get it to work. It ran like molasses. Literally.

Just a thought.

I don't imagine Linux is going to be run much on PIII or lower software here (we're going to be rid of most of the older stuff next year) but P4's ought to run SUSE if they run XP pretty well!  I suppose we'll probably end up running VISTA if the dung-heap comes installed on the hardware!
