Any want to sell their G5 desktop to me?
« on: July 12, 2006, 01:17:08 PM »
We're tearing into a Final Cut Pro project and need to replace the G4 with a G5. I think I need to get the 2.3 GHz. My stomach is churning to shell out the bucks. The used ones are so tempting on eBay.

There are some at Pricewatch:

I didn't check the price against the other place mentioned.  I'm pretty sure the above are "new" and if you can settle for used this is a good place:

I think $975 isn't a bad price for a 1.6GHz; I have bought things from Midwest MAC before and found them to be a good source.

I think I found what I need at Powermax via Lowendmac (thanks Kelly).  Now we're trying to decide between three models. They have a great selection of refurbished machines, meaning we can still get the three year applecare warranty. We have to get a dual processer, but then there are dual core, blah blah blah that I don't understand, so my friend the video editor guru is on the phone with them now to finalize the decision. Thank you for all the advice!, I wish I would have asked earlier today.

You can tell that I was feeling squeamish, my heading was "any want to sell" instead of "anyone want to sell".

Update: We ordered a 20" iMac with 2 GB ram, and the 256 video card. After talking with the expert at Powermax, we decided that the iMac would be the best value.

Whew! Now all I have to worry about is the bill!

Thank you again.

Money. By the time I added the RAM the refurb cost more. Plus my display is crummy (good 4.5 years ago, a flat screen SONY CRT that weighs a ton), and I'll get a 20" LCD on the iMac.

I'd like to know how your purchase works out!  I'm convinced that G5's are a better way to go for myself; if I can ever afford to go beyond my 400MHz G4!

The iMac arrived Friday. Now I'm waiting for my Final Cut Studio 5.1 upgrade install disk to arrive. Apple will update FCP 4 or 4.5 to Version 5 for $199., however one must MAIL the original install disks to Apple and then WAIT for the new disk. It's all a lesson in patience. Right now I'm enjoying the iMac until I have to sign it over to the DVD crew. When they are through shooting and editing three titles I get to have it back as my personal computer. Right now I'm enjoying the speed and the lovely display. I set it up in about five minutes.
