How do you delete a file in Word for Mac???
« on: July 17, 2006, 08:17:49 PM »
Both the wife (iBook -10.3.9) and I (G5 i MAc - 10.4.7) have word for Mac on our computers with the latest updates available applied.. (Wife's wp of choice as she must use it at her work and 'is familiar' with it)..... And we use it as the WP for our genealogical reports out of Reunion 8.0.6....

BUT 'we' cannot find a clean way to delete a file when we want to eliminate duplicates or 'old stuff'......  huh.gif
There DOES NOT appear to be a 'delete' clickable something anywhere iin Word.. doh.gif

I know all about possible replacements (see RHP's post re: Always paying attention to the significant other's strong likes / dislikes) nono.gif

Any 'reasonable' thoughts and/or suggestions will be gladly passed along and/or tried....

TIA...

YEESSS! 'we can do that and we've also reverted to opening an unwanted file and 'selecting all' and then hitting the delete key... leaving an empty named file in a folder and having to name the next 'wanted' file slightly differently.  dntknw.gif  doh.gif

Every other app we work with has a 'delete' option, not Word. huh.gif  huh.gif

MUST BE AN ENHANCEMENT!! rofl.gif  rofl.gif

Bob,

I must be missing something, but if you no longer want the file, why not just trash it?  huh.gif  dntknw.gif

Uhmm... yeah??

Every file you create in word is stored on your hard drive.  Typically it goes in your Documents folder (although you can specify any location you want).

If you want to delete it simply drag it to the trash or if you have a two button mouse right click and select "move to trash" from the contextual menu that appears (control click for a single button mouse).

I am not really certain I understand the problem.  I am guessing that you are referring to programs like mail that have a Delete button for individual messages, but that is not the norm for deleting files.

Could you give us a short list of apps that can delete a file from within the program? I don't think I have any, myself. Most apps just use the OS' navigation dialog for finding ( Opening ) and Saving files. I've never seen a program that had a "Delete File" menu item. I've always just trashed the ones I didn't think I needed anymore, sometimes also storing them on other media before doing that...

Email programs are slightly different. Some ( Eudora, Mail? ) keep messages as separate files and you can delete individual files/messages without harm. M$ keeps messages in a database that you are not allowed to touch.

Don't confuse the "Delete" item in the "Edit" menu for what you want to happen. The Edit menu usually only operates on what you may have selected in a particular window; it would delete the part of a file that you have selected ( highlighted ). Many programs don't have a "Delete" item, they simply use "Cut".
