Just noticed my iBook is running out of space again.

I have my external Hard Drive and I keep my iTunes on that.  I have used WHatSize and find:-

18.1GB Users (I am the only user)
10.3 GB Library
7.10 GB  Applications

Just noticed 4.98 GB Application Support
2.49 GB Audio
1.62 GB Printers (only have one printer)

How can I free up (safely) some space?

thanks
Frances

For printers, open Library/Printers
Delete any printers you don't have

Application Support contains files for programs you have. If there's something in there for a program you no longer have you can delete it.

Get Monolingual to remove Languages you don't need.

Use Onyx
http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html

or Yasu
http://www.jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/

To clear all Caches.

Move what you can to the external.

It's always OK to move Data Files [files you have created], and I suspect you have some large iMovie files or the camera files from your video projects.

All iMovie files are on the external HD.  I realised they are whoppers fairly soon into this movie project stuff! (I slowed down, crashed and got the point when it was quicker to cut up film with scissors and stick it together with cellotape!).

Thanks for the suggestions - I am off to have a go at finding some space!

Wish me luck - I am going in and may be some time!

Frances,

A MicroMat tech wrote a fairly extensive article on Where Did My Disk Space Go?

I have not experienced this problem, so I cannot speak from personal knowledge, but perhaps it will be of interest to you.

Monolingual does the job for me when necessary; most people don't miss all of the extra language stuff.  I suppose it wouldn't work in the schools where they're teaching Spanish or English as a Second Language but that's mainly the parochial schools where I don't need to do software support (I only do hardware repairs on these).

Been searching for an app I used/downloaded a few days ago and finally found it. <Disk Inventory X> uses a somewhat different disply method to show the size of files on your disk and possibly make it easier to find stuff that might be better moved to an external.

Another simpler way to view file sizes is <ShowVolumeFragmentation>, which also has some good info about what Tiger can and cannot do with file and disk fragmentation.

Thanks for those suggestions - I did use the Monolingual and some other suggestions like deleting printers not used and got back quite a bit of space.

I have just below 20GB of space now and can live with that.

Thanks chaps.  APpreciated.

In another article accessible from Harv's link [Why Defrag?], the MicroMat Tech advises that if one allows an HFS+ hard drive to get more than 85% full, it's likely that serious, irreparable directory damage will occur.

Yikes!

I am now the proud owner of 22GB of free space (so out of the 60GB, I am doing well).

Interestingly enough, when I had my little beige G3, I never ran out of space!

That micromat tech is quoted in an article by <Mr. Randy Singer> on simple but effect OS X maintenance methods ( mostly free, BYT ). But he brings up the fact that while Apple has improved the way X keeps things organized and defraged quite well, there is still no built-in method for keeping free space defraged. Disk Warrior is mainly for 'optimizing' the directory. TTP can 'optimize' files, but neither can 'optimize' or defrag free space. Even the micormat guy acknowledges that free space is becoming more critical as utilities make use of it as well as Virtual Memory. While I have downloaded it, I have not run/tested a program called iDefrag that appears to handle this type of 'optimization'.

Learn to delete your Swap Files

Learn to delete your system / user / internet / mail caches

Install "Cache Out X" to do this on every reboot or manually

Install "Omni Disk Sweeper" to R E A L L Y see where you have wasted HD space.

Install "Tidy Up"  to do just that.

Install "Trim the Fat" to remove Universal Intel code from your PPC  Mac

I have saved the best for last:

This awesome appl'  will simultaneously remove foreign language "localization" files AND remove extraneous PPC OR Universal Intel code from your applications.  The only drawback is that you have to do it one application at a time.  Sadly, I cannot recall the name of this freeware  appl !  Someone  will come to our immediate  rescue I am certain.

Monolingual will do that, but AFAIK, it does it all at once, e.g., running one app at a time is unnecessary.

NOTE! If you strip the universal code to make it just PPC, and later buy an Intel machine, you may experience problems should you run the Migration Assistant, e.g., the data you migrated to your (new) Intel machine may be lacking the requisite Universal code (as it has been stripped) At least that's my understanding. dntknw.gif

That all said, I believe TinkerTool system v1.6 will purge localizations and allow stripping one app at a time.

Either way, Flash's counsel is worthy of merit and worth considering (IMNHO).  salute.gif
