Trading QS 867 Mhz for an iBook 933 Mhz?
« on: July 21, 2006, 05:07:22 AM »
Hi TS people smile.gif

For a while now, i have been thinking that it would be easier for me to get a laptop of some sort, and trade it in against this Quicksilver.
The reason is simple, it has to do with my move to the UK.
When i will move over to the UK, in the beginning it will be a period of 3 months, with the possibility of another period of 3 months after that, this is cause i need to find work first.

That's why i have the following to think about:
  • During those first 3 months i will rent a small place, cause off course i don't want to spend all my money available on paying rent there. This means however that i have to go as light packed as possible (only clothes and...)
  • Moving over wil also means that, at least in the beginning i won't have internet connection, and knowing i need this to search for work (would be easier to have it anyway) i was thinking that it might be easier having a laptop and search for (free?) wireless places in London.
  • After let's say 6 months, Smiley would be coming over, and if not in the beginning than at least after a while she can have her computer send over. When that happens we have an (upgraded) 1,4 Ghz Digital Audio Desktop again.
I DO know that this iBook will not run as fast as my Quicksilver now.
Although the iBook has a 933 Mhz processor, that's about the only thing it has an advantage over this desktop, and the board is 133 Mhz also (so equal to this desktop).
About the only thing, cause the second thing is that the iBook runs PC2100 Ram modules wich runs on 266 Mhz, while the desktop now runs PC133 Ram modules which runs on 133 Mhz.
So the Ram is faster but... not half of what i have installed on this desktop, it only comes with 640 Mb of ram... and that's the only thing i really regret having (not) on the iBook.
But in general... i can deal with it since it will give me lots of freedom travelling and also much easier to use to search for work.
Oh, also... this iBook comes with a 60Gb drive installed (the girl had that one installed upon purchase... another good thing i guess).

I think i typed all i needed to for the question.
One more thing, i have this iBook listed now, someone who wants to sell it for 600 Euro.
I hope i can make at least 700 Euro out of this desktop, with everything included (except the speaker set).

Whether you get this particular iBook or another, it sounds from your description of your immediate future that a notebook is a logical move for now. It will provide a lot more options for you considering the portability factor.

With an airport card and a larger drive it comes in a little below your tower in price comparisons on used models. If speed in video processing is not crucial it may be a good machine for your temporary situation. Of course you don't know how well the PB has been treated but (trying not to be sexist here) I would guess a female might have taken better care with it. smile.gif

Can you test it before buying/trading?

Hehehe, i was thinking the same thing, girls always take care of their stuff wink.gif well mostly that is tongue.gif
Also, since she bought it with an upgraded harddisk, that means she either knows some stuff... or she had it talked into her head by the salesman  biggrin.gif
I will testdrive it as much as possible, but i also asked her in the mail to be honest about the how it works and if there is any damage.
Since she is dutch and that means abit of traveltime for me to get it (if i buy it), so i do want to be as sure as possible.

How about this 867 Mhz G4 12" Powerbook?
The good thing about it, i can use a second monitor when at home. smile.gif
It's only 50 euro more but it does has Airport Extreme already build in, while the other one will be an extra since it doesn't have yet.

This person is selling his 1,333 Ghz 12" Powerbook for 800 Euro.
This is about as high as i can go but at least it has good Ram memory, a 60Gb drive and Airport and bluetooth build in.

Hmmm smile.gif

If it suites your needs, I think you should do it.

The iBook really isn't a bad deal.  Even if the video processor is slower it is only running a 14" screen and should do it pretty well.

Hmm, the Powerbook, it is a little slower than the iBook.  But, processor speed is not everything as we all know.  bus, memory and hard drive speed all add up.  One thing that I did notice is that you would be giving up real estate with a 12" screen on the PB..... I still would like the iBook at this point.

You mentioned using a second monitor or mirroring.  can't the iBook do that?  Okay mirroring yes, but, a hack for extended desktops should make it work.

Hey Thanks Al clap.gif
I had the url saved in my bookmarks from that extended desktop thingy, but still thanks smile.gif
Already have another option, an iBook 1,4 Ghz in Antwerp, so that's pretty close by, and this one has a 100 Gb drive ohmy.gif
This for only 600 euro.

After considering about 10 options, i got the deal on one.
A 12" (yup) 1,2 Ghz G4 iBook with 768 Ram.
Judging on the Apple specs pages, it runs a maximum of 1,152 Ghz Ram in PC2100 DDR SODIMM's.
So i guess i'm going to search for a 1Gb module.
Anyone know a cheap place to buy it?
