OT - "Ribbit" Salad
« on: August 31, 2006, 05:16:23 PM »
Look closely at the package. Just below the words Fresco Lavado....

Don't forget this brand of fresh lettuce. What probably happened is, the water the lettuce was washed in contained polliwogs and these became fresh new frogs, right in the packages. So if you're looking for salad fixings with a little more body, then be sure and try this brand. Don't forget, it's the extra care that Mexican companies take that makes the difference.
Cheers, Tom

As for how it got there - who knows, but I DO know it wasn't a former polliwog that turned into a frog in the bag!!! Polliwogs/tadpoles take a LONG time to turn into frogs - anywhere from 6 to 9 weeks in the case of some of the smaller frogs, to over two years in the case of the American Bullfrog. Furthermore, a polliwog/tadpole removed from the water is going to die - not magically change into a frog. Even if you kiss it. wink.gif

And I don't know about you - but 9 week old lettuce doesn't hold much appeal. eek2.gif

I've seen that; it's possible but not very likely given the things that happen to those bags of salad in transit.

Pictures like that are easy to concoct with Photoshop. It would take a forensics expert to declare it legit before I'd believe it.

Considering the packaging and the 'weighing' involved, I doubt it could have happened in the plant.

As I ate my salad last night, I got the giggles. Try explaining this to your dinner companions without grossing them out. LOL! Wonder if Griff will ever invite us over for dinner again? biggrin.gif

We have gotten some really nice worms out of our veggie gardens over the years, but never a froggie.
They stick to our flower garden, they must be smart.  But our neighbour's cat eventually find them and either eat them, or play so hard that they die.
Cute though!

Speaking of 'fresh produce'...

On our first trip to Italy, my wife and I went to a restaurant recommended by a Fodor's reader. Service was quite good, language was not a big problem, until...

Judy, sitting across from me, said there seemed to be something 'alive' in my salad. I made a cursory examination and didn't find anything.

A few seconds later, she said there was something alive in the bowl and it was trying to get out! That's when I spotted the slug/snail.

I discreetly motioned the waiter to return and suggested he might bring me another salad. He apologized profusely, in Italian and some broken English and took away the salad. Moments later he returned with what was supposedly a new bowl and salad and made a very amusing comment: "The next customer, he comes in and asks for escargot, we give him yours!" smile.gif

Seems most restaurants get their deliveries early in the morning and in the alley. The produce may sit there for several hours, plenty of time for 'locals' to 'inspect' the fresh stuff!

I've had worms/caterpillars in produce too - some dead, some still alive, despite refrigeration etc. The worst, of course, is HALF a worm... wink.gif
