I'll have to wait until tonight to download this because the school districts bandwidth is kind of non-existent right now!

But I think you have to purchase Office for Mac.   And if I need a translation for some .doc info that a friend sends me, I would not really need it, if I can either make .pdfs out of them, or fire up NeoOffice if they are more complex.
Thats why NeoOffice is so nice!

This version of NeoOffice runs almost as slowly on my G4/400MHz Powermac as the previous version ran on my G3/300MHz.  I guess you should expect a word processor written in Java to run a little more slowly than one written in a compiled C or something.  Otherwise it looks great so far; no lockups or crashes.

Jane - Not to slight the NeoOffice people you can probably read Word Doc's a lot more easily with something like Abiword ( http://www.abisource.com/ ) which is also free.  It's much smaller and runs faster on the same hardware.  It doesn't include spreadsheets or other things that NeoOffice does but if all you wanted was to read or write Word it's great.

That, I won't say so.

Unlike in Java Runtime Environment for Windows platform which is a separate plug-in to Windows, Jave is one of the foundation of Mac OS X.

Many people do have an impression that Java applications are slow due to the experience of Java Applets (running under browser).

However, Apple does favour Objective-C as the default language for writing applications for Mac OS X.

Sorry to be off topic.

Howdy, Jane.

"Little" might be a bit of an exaggeration at 120 MB. tongue.gif
Ignore the argumentative nature of this poster. He is old and can't engage in meaningful dialog very long.
Therefore, management asks that you at least humor him. Thanks.

I was told by one of my departments programmers that Java was slower due to interpreted nature and to the slowness of its "garbage collection" routines; that is the routines tasked with recovering space in memory that is filled with memory variables that are no longer needed.  I have worked as a xBase and C programmer but that was an aeon or two ago; but what he said sounded plausible.

I've had Openoffice 1.1.2 and neoofficeJ for some time and they’re great free programs. I've downloaded the new Beta and find it still lags far behind MSOffice in some areas like the writers tools/thesaurus and found the scroll arrows don't work.

I don't see much difference and as gunug mentioned it's slow. If you resize the window the graphics will temporarily disappear as it tries to reestablish itself.

It's still large @ 316.9 mb but a bit small er than the J version @ 337mb and even boosting the memory allotment had no impact or it's speed.

It's still a good program but it's not quite up to MS standards yet. I've used Mariner in the past but it didn't handle some of my files. AppleWorks is still my favorite for simplicity sake text program but I suspect its history.

For inefficiency in business and file translation MS Office is almost a must. huh.gif
